PC locking up with black screen after Win7 install...?

Installed Windows 7 several months back. Been running like a champ and loving it. Recently I've been having issues that I'm not sure of. The system will go into hibernate and when I go to bring it back up, the computer comes back online but the screen will stay black and the mouse does not light up, the keyboard does. It will then take me about 2-3 restarts to get it back and going. After I do the initial restart, it'll make it to the windows loading logo and halfway through will then go to the black screen. Any ideas? My only guess is that the harddrive is starting to go out perhaps.

Black screen and no USB power sounds like a PSU issue. Your power supply isn't supplying enough power to your video card and USB ports.

I'd go to Best Buy and buy a cheap PSU to test it out (if you don't already have a spare), and if it doesn't work, you could take it back. If it does work, still take it back and buy a brand name one at newegg.com

I think Azhar is correct, sounds like PSU.
The gigabyte motherboard probably isn't helping, not that gigabyte makes bad boards but they have the auto reboot thing when the board detects (or thinks it detects) a bad overclock, when the psu starts dieing it can be a real pain in the butt. I had a similar issue as you. you could try disabling EIST and set all voltages to normal (not auto)to try a temporary fix

I used to run a 2.4 Core2 Duo at 9x333=3ghz with all the power savings stuff turned on. after a year or so the computer started having trouble cold booting and comming out of sleep at overlock settings, but i could always re-overclock. Months later even the overclock would not work, infact setting the paramaters to anything but stock would result in the "gigabyte reboot feature". After more time having EIST turned on would crash windows shortly after boot-up soon after even "auto" voltage settings would not work. Finally the PSU just stopped turning on at all.

Anyhow dropped in a new PSU and im back up 100% 9x333 with all the bells and whistles.

I recommend getting a PSU with a powerful single 12v rail and a quiet 140mm Fan

I haven't overclocked anything. The power supply should be more than enough for my system. However, I'll try disabling the hibernate.

I had this same problem. I would put my computer to sleep at night next morning the computer and fans would all turn on but my screen was still black. It ended up being my video card. The quickest way to get my computer to reboot was to completely remove the graphics card my computer and put it back in. Card ended up dying last week. PSU still going strong. Computer wakes up everytime

I wasn't referring to the strength of your PSU, but that it might just be dying.
