Last night my PC started freezing again. It happens mainly when the PC was on for a (short) while and I start something new, it even freezes when I open a website and a big flash animation starts playing. It doesn't restart, the picture just stays the same.
I wanted to reinstall XP in the near future anyways so yesterday I thought why not do it today. Well, the installation went without problems, but it didn't take long for the PC to start freezing again.
My first guess was that the fans were covered with dust, so I cleaned them. My fans are now cleaner than when they left production and it didn't help either. Next guess was that it could be the memory. I have two memory sticks (one old one with 256 mb and a new one with 512 mb) and first I removed the 256 mb stick to see what happens. It still freezed. Then I removed the 512 mb one and put the 256 mb one back in. Still crashes.

The same problem happened to me a few years ago where I also couldn't figure out what was causing it. I ended up buying a new motherboard and new CPU, which I'd like to avoid this time.

Does anyone have any hints on what I could try? Because I'm at a point where I can't figure out what could be causing it any more.
 
Now I was told that it could be the graphics card causing this. Would this be possible? The entire PC just freezes when it crashes.
 
I've had a faulty power supply do the same thing. Borrow a friends or buy a back-up and check it out.
 
If you got parts to swap out I would start there. I had a PC freeze up one time randomly and I had a bad sound card.
 
I don't have spare parts here, which is why I am trying to narrow it down as much as possible. I wouldn't want to go to neighbors and ask them if I can rip their PCs apart when I can narrow it down to one or two things first.

Ok, now I replaced the graphics card and it still freezes. What could possibly be the cause for these problems?
 
make sure you mainboard is not dusty at all, my mainboard stopped working because of that once...
 
The PSU appears to be ok as far as I can tell from the BIOS and I also cleaned out as much dust as I could. It didn't help.
The thing is, this started after a long time of no changes, so it's no configuration issue. Something has to be broken somehow and I can't figure out what.
 
Icheb, my pc started freezing just like yours(when I clicked on something, going to a different program etc.),I checked everything including my power supply. My psu looked very good in my Asus Probe, so I continued checking and reinstalling drivers and everything else. I finally tried a different psu I had laying around,it was underpowered for running my three hard drives so I just connected to my main one and tested. This is where I found my psu to be the problem. I realize you don't have another one handy, but it may be to yuor advantage to get a "quality" psu, and if your current psu isn't the problem you'll allways have it to use as a backup or for testing purposes in the future.
