My friend's PC stopped working yesturday, it couldn't turn on. I suspected his PSU was fried or something because there was a light burning smell. When the power switch is pressed, nothing happens, no power light, no HDD light. The fans weren't turning either.

I tried unplugging the PSU cable and plug it in again, this time the lights flickered but still no fans were turning. Pressed the ON button again, nothing happens

the specs:

Gigabyte 7VTXE Mobo
AMD XP 2400+
256 DDR RAM
Leadtek A340TD FX5200 128MB
A-Open 56K V.90 INT
Maxtor 40Gb SATA100
16X DVD ROM
16X8X32 CDRW
300W PSU

Any ideas?

I'd say, that smells like a Burnt CPU. Then again, I'm not positive about that. I'd say, you're going to need to check the PSU, the Mobo, the RAM, the Vid Card, the CPU, and just about everythint else connected to that mainboard. If your PSU went, it could have taken EVERYTHING in your case with it.

get a few coca-colas (or other highly-caffinated drinks) and start swapping parts, me boyo.

much luck.
