I am nearing a situation once more where I need a new monitor. This happens to me every now and then and I have habitually bought the wrong thing. I really understand computer hardware but when it comes to displays I'm just lost.

I've read through a few threads on this forum and you guys really seem to have a better handle on this than anywhere else.

I want a display in the 23 to 24 inch range (I'd accept a 22 if it was that much better), don't intend to watch movies on it and would like a 1920x1200 resolution if possible. My budget is a solid $400 or less. If it is available at Newegg, all the better.

From my reading it seems like I should avoid TN panels like the plague. I'm pretty sure that is what I own now. I am quite sensitive to response time but I am looking for a better experience. What good is a nice graphics card without a usable monitor.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you guys have. I did find this...

Thoughts?

The problem is that TN panels are currently the most responsive panels.

If you go with SPVA or IPS you can expect to see some input lag.
There are some exceptions such as the 2209WA E-IPS, however its resolution is 1680x1050 so it doesn't fit your resolution criteria.

If gaming, responsiveness, and input lag are top priorities for you, you might have to settle for a really good TN panel OR wait till the next wave of e-IPS monitors come out and see how good they are for gaming. NEC, Dell, and LG are all coming out with new e-IPS monitors soon.

Mostly, TN panels use a dithering method so it isn't a true 16.7 million color display. That NEC LCD that you posted is actually a TN panel. IT doesn't have 178/178 viewing angles, most likely 160/160.

Hmm, well that is actually a really good thing to know! I most certainly would have been upset about that. Thank you for catching that little error!

2209WA is a good choice if you're willing to go 22" 1680x1050 and slightly more response time with its E-IPS panel and have much better quality over TN monitors.

Good compromise design, IMO. :)

Actually, 2209WA doesn't suffer from motion trailing/smearing and it has negligible input lag.

PS: Did I mention no banding

PPS: The 2209WA is design by Dell, manufactured by Foxconn with use of e-IPS panel by LGD. Sorry, I just love saying that ^-^

I thought the 2209WA was on back order or discontinued.

I would be interested in that display but it doesn't seem available on Dell. There is an S2209W but not a 2209WA that I could get into a cart. I can find information on it though.

Anyone have any opinions of that Asus I linked?

It's not discontinued, I don't think. But it's true that the 2209WA is on considerable backorder. There was a brief period in the middle of July when Dell got a new batch, but I'm sure they're sold out again by now.

The S model is TN. It has nothing to do with the WA model. So stay away if you don't want a TN.

As of now, If it's not a TN panel, it's not a gaming monitor. It's as simple as that.

because TNs have the least input lag, which is important for fast paced gaming.

IPS panels are also known to have negligible input lag (+ one doesn't have to worry about motion performance or other problems associated with TN)

That test is completely inaccurate and shouldn't be referenced. Any time someone uses that flatpanels.dk timer and gets a multiple of 10 ms, the results are totally wrong. Lag can't vary from 10 ms to 40 ms like that.

The Dell 2209WA has no lag other than pixel response time:

I don't have an application/tool with high degree of accuracy (like the one above).

So I just use the timer below and with shutter speed of 1/1000. I record the lowest and the highest possible value and average them out.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/response_time.php

During my tests, the Dell 2209WA yield 15 to 31ms, which means the average is ~23ms, which is pretty low (IMO, negligible).

But tosty's test is spot on.

The 22" gaming monitor market remains relatively easy; it's the 60Hz Dell 2209WA vs the two true 120Hz LCD monitors, the Samsung 2233rz and Viewsonic VX2265wm, with possibly the 60Hz LG L227WTG-PF when the 2209WA isn't available due to extreme demand. The 2209WA is e-IPS, the S2209 is a completely unrelated and inferior TN, it seems like all true 120Hz LCD monitors (both existing and rumored) are TNs, and the L227WTG-PF is a TN. True 120Hz is a pretty serious advantage for any gaming monitor, but the 2209WA's e-IPS panel is also has serious advantage over any TN, so that ends up being a very interesting choice. There are very few 1920x1200 22" monitors and they tend to be too expensive to be worth it.

The 24" gaming monitor market is, as it always has been, difficult and annoying to shop for. At $400 or less, they are all TNs; the HP LP2475w, an IPS, is closer to $600. It seems to me like most of the 23" monitors are 1920x1080 TNs. The Hardcore Gaming section of the Anandtech LCD Thread list the BenQ G2400WD and Acer G24 as the best 24" gaming monitors, but BenQ is getting a bit notorious for poor support and the Acer G24 is new to me.

When in doubt about what kind of panel a monitor is, see the TFT Central Panel Type List. Generally speaking, TNs are the fastest, IPS can approach TNs for gaming speed, VA panels tend to be too slow for gaming.

If any were in stock I would have bought one of these. I was so sick of playing my 360 on my 20" screen with bars on the top and bottom I decided to buy an ASUS 23.6" 1080p LCD. It's not that I hate black bars (i don't mind em at all in other scenarios) it's just that if you have black bars on a 20" screen then the image gets rather small. :| My 20" screen is also not a tn type, I think it is MVA and it is responsive enough to enjoy games on.

e-IPS viewing angles are far superior to TN both vertically and horizontally

True. But how many of us can get a 2209WA right now? There are still people on the waiting list who ordered this thing weeks ago. The other minus to the 2209WA is its resolution. Only 1680x1050.

There's a guy in the 2209WA that just recently ordered one by calling and got it for a good price, he's supposed to get it August 18th. I'm waiting to see if others can get the same deal.

Well that's me taken the plunge. My trusty old neovo f-419, P-MVA should have been replaced a long way back.

I've been looking at monitros for some time. I can't justify going for the price of 120hz right now. 75hz seems good enough for me.

So with luck I'll have my 2209WA tomorrow.

Seems like the the Samsung XL2370 would have been ideal here, anyone heard when it might be available?

We don't know enough about samsung to know if it's a good gaming monitor.

Surely the main thing about it is that it's LED backlit, rather than anything else.

Anyone want to take a guess as to when the 2209WA will be back in stock? I guess I can call to order it but as of now I have no idea what the price even is.

there's a 20% off coupon in the 2209WA thread that will take off the original price of $279.99 aka $280. If you use the cached link from google in the thread as well you can use it. The guy I talked about before ended up getting duped by the salesman and it was a misinfo. Currently sounds like if you order today you'll get it by October.

Actually, 2209WA doesn't suffer from motion trailing/smearing and it has negligible input lag.

People have been telling me this for years regarding LCD monitors and every time I used one of them I was reminded of the seething hatred I have for my fellow man thanks to their immense stupidity.

The only LCDs you can make a reasonable argument for as "gaming monitors" right now are the Samsung 2233rz and the Viewsonic VX2265wm and they have their own faults in other departments.

On what basis you disregard the Dell 2209WA?

With out a doubt, the Dell 2209WA is the best 22" monitor on the plant. It is not an opinion, it's an actual fact.

PS: Don't confuse motion trailing/smearing with motion blur.

I'm in the market for a display, and that Dell 2209WA looks pretty tempting, besides, all that good reputation it has makes it a purchase Win... OTOH, I'd like to game @ 1920x1200...

So many choices... =/

There is a lot to be said for gaming at 1650x1050. It's 24% less taxing on your graphics card than 1920x1200.

P.S. Niello - Which plant? :p

p.p.s I ordered mine yesterday and am looking at this forum with it now (UK)
