PC Freezes While Playing Games

I can play a game for say 30-60min before my PC hard locks/freezes. Freezes the game scene & I can't do a thing. I have to power down. I don't have this issue when surfing the net, only while gaming. I'm not to computer savvy but I need to get this fixed. I want to game without Lock-up interruptions.
I recently installed the latest driver for my BFG Nv 7800GT video card. I read on another thread that you need to delete all the old drivers. Could that be my problem? If so, how do I delete/wash the old ones? I've checked the temp using AsusProbe & it maxed in-game around 107F. I'm getting ready to try playing with the door off of my case. I really don't think heat is the problem but I'll try it anyway.
What can I do? Like I said, I'm not too computer savvy but I would like to fix this myself if I can. Please give suggestions/instructions (detailed if you can) on what I can do to find & fix this problem.
Thanks up front.

Sure sounds like something is overheating. Check the temp of the processor / vide card / and chipset. as I only use ati I have no idea what temp your card should run at but 107 seems low for any modern card( thats around 41c). I'd download either tools from bfg or from nvidia as I don't think that asus program is giving you the right numbers.

Asus Probe only shows the temp of the processor and northbridge not the video card, to show that you would need to go into the display settings through the nvidia interface.

Well, played for awhile with the case door off & no lock up at all. Maybe I need another fan. I have 2 case fans. Both blowing into my system. The Power supply suchs in air from inside & blows it out. No pproblems so far with the case door off though. Maybe heat is the issue after all.

What type of power supply? Does your motherboard make a noise right before. Had this problem for a while and could not figure it out. Replaced power supply and never had it happen since.

I got a brand new Dynex 500w power supply. It may suck. I've never heard of the brand.
I haven't noticed my MOBO making any noise before freezing.

Yeah, Iv'e never heard of Dynex. But that doesn't mean that theyr'e not any good. I'm just relating a similar experience I was having. If you exhaust all other measures, I would look into it. I thought mine might be overheating also, but that's not what it was. I bought an Antec 480 true blue and never had that problem again. Good luck man!

Thanks Angryeagle. If all else fails I may pick up a new one.

Dynex is Best Buy's brand. The company that makes Dynex power supplies is called Huntkey. I can't find a review on any of their products and I think once on a Google search I found their webpage. But other than that, no info.

I stock the Best Buy store I work at. To be perfectly honest with you I wouldn't touch a Dynex power supply just because of the fact that you can't even find any information, reviews, or anything related to more info on their products. If it's not worth a reviewer's time to look at them, it's not worth my money and the potential to fry my hardware. Simple as that.

Put it this way - I have a Dynex computer case, but it doesn't have a Dynex power supply with it. It has an Allied 500W power supply. Now why would you sell a $170 tower case and not even put in your own brand power supply? (That's what it retailed for but since I work there you can bet your ass I didn't pay that)

That in itself shows the trust. (Btw, the case is nice, if a little on the cheap side in terms of build quality. The top piece occasionally flexes when you push down, and this is supposed to be STEEL. My personal recommendation is don't go on the cheap and get this if you work at BB because that's what I did)

I would rip that sucker out and try a real brand name PSU first and foremost.

Whats your CPU?
Usually if opening the case solves the problem that means something is overheating.
I'd check CPU temps (especially if you're using Intel), and GPU temps.
If both check out fine, then mobob chipset is your net stop.
A lousy PSU could cause this but usually that locks up fairely fast.

They sure did charge me a arm for the dynex. I had to get that one. It had the connection I needed. They didn't have any other Power supply with that type connector. That's what they told me.

My CPU AMD 64 3500+

I'm only running the 1 GPU (7800gt).

Well, I guess I will get another case fan since having the case door off seemed to work. Should I connect a new fan to the MOBO or Power supply? I've never done this before :-<

Well, if it turns out not to be a overheating issue.
I need to buy another power supply?
My HDD has some years on it but haven't heard any clicking or anything else. Only when I'm playing a game is when it freezes. It didn't freeze yesterday with the case left open but I need to play a longer session today just to make sure.

mine started doing this too once it got hotter out, i fixed it by taking the heatsink off my video card, and reapplying artic silver 5 and cleaning all my fans. I also added another 80 and mm fan and a 120 that blows across the cpu and top of video card. the 80mm is blowing right on the heatsink of my video card.

Well either that is one of the only stores that carries Dynex PC components exclusively, or you were told wrong. Best Buy does carry Antec power supplies. Specifically, I have seen the Neopower, Smartpower, Truepower 2.0's, and the NeoHE's sitting on the shelf at the store I work at. I couldn't tell you right off the bat how well they work or in comparison to that Dynex one, but I wouldn't trust it myself and refuse to trust it until someone around here reviews those things inside and out.

What connection specifically did they tell you that you needed that only theirs had?

Some sort of double plug for my GPU.

Alright I looked & I have 1 fan at the bottom front of my PC (exhast) sitting under my HDD.
I have 1 fan on the upper back & I turned it so it would exhast out.
Lastly I have 1 case fan on the door (intake). Also, my PSU has a big fan underneath that intakes from inside the case & blows it out the back. I have a slot under the front fan on the very bottom front & a slot under the back for more fans. How do you reccommend I position the fans I have now & if I were to buy two more? I need the best cooling possible.

Oh, when I look in Asus probe it says my chasis fan is under threshold. I leave that fan unchecked cause I don't think it really monitors it. Don't think it's connected cause when I when I enable the fan monitoring for the chasis fan & click on fan monitoring it shows all the fans & their speeds except there is nothing for the chasis fan so I leave it unchecked where I don't here the alert. I know the fan is working.

They either informed you incorrectly just to get the margin out of you instead of having you buy an Antec supply, or you have one messed up non-standard video card. The only thing I can think of that you're referring to would be the power connectors for video cards needing additional power from the power supply. If I'm not mistaken any power supply that's approved for SLI will have this, but anyone here can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The only -other- thing I can think of that they're referring to is the 20+4 pin connector, where it has 20 pins to fit a 20-pin motherboard, and an additional 4 for a 24 pin board. The 4 pins can be broken off if they're not necessary.

If it's neither of those, then I think you got suckered in the name of some salesperson trying to keep from getting written up.

Well, I broke down & took my rig to Circuit City. I'm gonna let them figure it out. Thanks for all the suggestions & posts though. I couldn't nail it down as to what was causing the problem. I'd rather pay them than fool with it myself now. Hopefully they'll fix it.

Yes, it was the power supply. Never buy a Dynex! I got an Antec & games running great. Thanks agin for all the help.
