I just got done picking out/ordering my friends mom's new computer. Mostly going to be used for Web Browsing/Word Processing, maybe the occasional "friend rig" when friends come over. All parts ordered off Newegg for a final price (including shipping) of $464.07.

The goal was <$500 (achieved) yet still quality ( IMO, achieved ). Monitor will be my friend's old one (he just got a new one) and his old video card will be used (fx5200 goodness) as he jus ordered a 6600gt :D that should arrive here wednesday along with his moms new rig.

Setup looks fine to me. I have had the same processor for about 2 years now, and it's been doing great for me.
 
The only thing I wasn't dead on about was the motherboard... Never had any experience with Abit, but everything I hear about them is positive, thought I would give them a shot. I also haven't ever built my own P4 rig either (first P4 rig was custom built for me by someone else), so I didn't really know the good, inexpensive mobos. I think it will turn out alright though. I could always over clock that pressy to 2.6 (small but its not my comp so..) and it could be better than my friends :D ....welll........ processor wise.... :p
 
See if you can't squeeze in a 800mhz fsb proc (C or E version). If you can go this route, add a 865PE motherboard and you will see a huge performance difference for about $50-75 more.
 
Was thinking about going that route...But it's all ordered already and will be here tomorrow. Besides, I doubt my friends mom is going to notice the change, considering she will be word processing and web surfing :p

Friend is only running a 2.53 P4 so...they will be about the same. The 2.4a has 1mb cache where his only has 512, so I might be able to overclock it a wee bit, and get better performance anyways.......Wait.......might be able to..............of course I will!!!
