PC DVD Playback Trouble...

Alright, I just formatted my hard drive and installed XP Pro from scratch. The trouble is, when using PowerDVD, the DVD's sound and picture skip a little bit. The sound is intolerable, and the picture is almost as bad. When using Win98 I never had this problem at all, and I know my PC has the power and resources to run a DVD in XP properly. The only thing I can think of is DMA, as I had this problem in 98 until I altered the DVD drives DMA settings. However, in XP I can't find a way to do this. I've updated drivers and everything and no luck...

Anything you guys may know of that may help would be appreciated...
 
Bring up your System Properties page (Windows Key + Break), select the Hardware Tab, go into Device Manager.

Once there, find your IDE controller, and it'll allow you to change the DMA settings.

Problem is, XP should already be running the drive in DMA mode if the controller and DVD drive support it.

Try updating your sound card drivers, and your video card drivers.

Try enabling hardware acceleration in PowerDVD for your Video card (if supported)

Try getting more memory. XP is a resource hog compared to 98. 384mb isn't a lot.
 
Some of the above isn't true....so I'll explain.

XP doesn't always default to DMA. It usually needs chipset drivers installed, if DMA isn't working right away. Look on the motherboard's website for chipset drivers and install them. XP is a little bit of a hog, but 384 is just fine for watching a movie. I'm thinking your missing drivers somewhere...either chipset, video, or audio. SIS chipsets absolutely suck for performance, so I would highly recommend an add-in video card. First, check the drivers of the three things I mentioned...and install the latest ones.
