PC crashing with UPS

I'm having a very strange problem and I'm hoping someone here can help.

I have my PC on a UPS (actually I've tried 3 different units ranging from 550VA - 1000VA and it doesn't make a difference). Anytime I get a power glitch of any sort, or self test the UPS, the PC crashes. Anything else plugged into the UPS continues to run but the PC crashes and then re-boots everytime.

Here's my configuration:

Antec Sonata III 500 case with 500 watt powers supply
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P motherboard
Intel i7- 920 processor
Windows Vista 64 bit
12 Gig of RAM

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Howard

if you have the USB cable plugged into the PC from the UPS, unplug it and try the self test again.

Oh, I also remember reading something about some PSU's not being compatible with the sine wave output of most UPS's.

Thank you for your very quick reply. You hit the nail on the head. Based upon your response I was able to do a little more research on the PC's power supply and it is a PFC power supply. So now it looks like I'm going to have to lay out significant dollars for a UPS.

Do you or anyone else have any suggestions for a compatible UPS that won't break the bank?

Thanks again for the help,

Howard

I have had Enermax, FSP and Corsair PSUs on a wide range of UPSs, both quality (APC, MGE) and some cheaper ones (Sweex, Trust) without any major issues.

What PSU do you have in your case exactly? It may be a bad one. What brand UPS did you try?

The PSU comes with the Sonata III 500 case. It's the Antec 500 Watt EarthWatts PSU.

I've tried both APC and Tripplite UPS systems on it with the same results. It appears that because it's a PFC PSU that I'm going to need to use a UPS which out puts a true sine wave.

Virtually everyone is using (A)PFC PSUs these days and have no issues without an UPS putting out true sinewave. It may not be the most efficient for use with an APFC-enabled PSU, but there is no reason why it won't work. All my UPSs are stepped sine and never heard or seen anything unusual when the systems went on battery power.

True sine would be used for delicate equipment which absolutely needs it, computer PSUs do not fall into that category. I would still blame your PSU for sucking :)

Thanks for the information. In that case I guess I'm going to have to contact Antec and see what they have to say. The PSU should still be covered under warranty.
