The last time I connected my PC to home theater speakers, I got a sound card that had an optical output and connected it to my Denon receiver. This was 7 years ago.

I now have a 5.1 speaker system that I want to use for my computer. These are normal home theater speakers with no PC connections. It's been some time since I've done this so I wanted to ask what everyone thinks is the best way to get these working with my PC.

I currently use headphones connected to the onboard sound connectors on my MB.

Thoughts?
 
Get a cheap 5.1 receiver. You can find one without hdmi pretty cheap
 
"normal" home theater speakers will need some kind of amplification. You could go with a used receiver from craigslist or a t amp from some place like parts express.
 
Those T amps look interesting. But I think I will have to go with a low end receiver. Now I need to find something small...
