I have the following problem :

I just assembled my new pc (all new components) :

Motherboard : Intel® Desktop Board D975XBX2
CPU : Core 2 duo E6600
Graphic card : Gigabyte GeForce 7950 GT (GV-NX795T512H-RH)
Ram 2 x 1 Gig ram

When all was installed I booted and everything seems to work ok but... no image on my screen… All fans are turning (including the geforce fan), the DVD drive takes the windows cd, the HD seems to turn too, but no image.

Anyone have any idea? Im thinking in 2 directions atm :

1) my power supply is not powerfull enough (I have a 380 watt Antec)
2) The Geforce is broke (or atleast the connectors or something)

This is not the first PC I assemble so im not a complete noob but still im not a pro either. SO if you have any advise or idea, I will be glad to try it out.

Cheers

Do you get beeps? Beeps are bad. If so, is it one long and two short?

The PSU problem should be easy enough to locate. Just disconnect everything but the video card CPU and one RAM stick. If it boots, you need a new one.

If you have a floppy drive, make sure the connector is not upside down.

Is it in the case or out of the case? Try booting out of the case with 1 ram and the video card and see if it boots.

Fell victim to that one myself one time...:)....drove me nuts for about 2 hours...... DOH!

Thx for all the reactions but :

No floppy installed
No beebs what so ever
CPU fan is plugged

Il try the booting with only the primary stuff

Agree with Rts...I bet its that 6-pin connector from the PSU that needs to be connected to the card.

like one of the other guys said - put it together outside the case on something like a wooden surface. only install cpu, hs/f, vid card and 1 stick of ram. start the board by using a flat blade screwdriver to short the pins that the power button is usually connected to - dont worry, this will not harm machine in any way. if it boots up, you have a short somewhere - possibly and extra standoff, a wire pulled out of a molex, a bare wire, etc. if it does not boot, it could be either another bad bx2, or bad psu, even bad cpu. hard to tell without a beep code. you will have to swap out components to find which is bad.

6pin connector goes to the GPU. This is required.

4pin goes to the P4 connector on the motherboard. This is required if the board has one. Alot of older boards didn't need this.

There's a new 8pin that REPLACES THE 4pin P4 connector. This can be substituted by plugging in a 4pin connector into 1/2 the 8pin slots.

some vidcards (nVidia iirc) require a standard 4pin flat plug instead of a 6 pin. This is very easy to miss. It's usually on the underside edge of the card, and if you don't have it plugged in your screen will stay dark.

No beeps at all??? Check the seating of your CPU. Everything else (RAM, Video, etc...) should give you a beep code.

Has basic PC function changed??? I was not aware that this would cause a PC, NOT to boot.... I have done this in the past and all it did was keep the Floppy drive light on 24/7 (and not allow floppy disk reads/write). Or are you talking about the floppy POWER lead?

By looking at the minimum specs for the video card...
A 350W PCI Express compliant system power supply (with 12V current rating of 22A or more)

I think you need a new power supply, maybe that the problem...

In the BIOS, is the video set to PCI ex (first desplay device or something)?
How long are you waiting?
I dont have time to look up the MB spec, but if it has 2 PCIEX slots have you tried the other?

If there are no beeps, verify that the board has an onboard speaker. Some of the newer boards do not. Pull a speaker from another machine, if it does not. Also, that 380 is going to be a problem, if it isn't already.

It should, but it doesn't always. My last build had bad ram and I didn't get any beeps.

I had a problem with a system once where everything would work perfect except the video card it kept saying that the 4pin molex was unplugged so it underclocked my card. I swapped out my power supply with a more powerful one and the problem was solved.

Try with another 3D card if possible. I have had plenty of 3D cards doing the very same thing and its always been broken 3D card :(

I think people over estimate the PSU importance with this particular problem. Its not like the card draws out max wattages when you boot up the machine  You should reach bios even with minimum spec PSU IMO.

edit:

Actually today at work, I did have something of an issue like this. I would boot up my computer repeatedly but no picture. After awhile of pulling out power connectors all around, the machine booted up and worked flawlessly after that. Now I had assemblyed the machine the day before without any issues. Shutted it down for the night and the next morning, no picture. I did suspect the power source at first, but then it started working ok. Now that was plain weird :)

Maybe you should try popping out the motherboard battery and clearing the CMOS.

the computer should still boot without the power connector to the card.
you'll just get a warning in windows saying the card is running in low-power mode...
i can boot my machine fine without my vid cards power plugged in.

like someone else suggested here, take everything out of the case and try to boot with the bare minimum. you could always pick up a power supply locally to test it with, then if it works you know thats the problem. you can always take the return the PSU and order one if thats what u prefer...

Fans rquire little power to run and dont draw a whole lot of power, but your Vid card and CPU are power drinkers. With your rig I would go with a good 450W PSU or higher, but 450W should be enough.

Kind of skimmed most of this thread, but didn't see conclusive proof - from the PSU to the mobo have you connected both the 24-pin (not a 20-pin) and the 8-pin power connectors? The 8-pin one is behind and near the mouse/keyboard/USB ports. This is separate from a 4-pin molex that is behind the audio ports.

This might be the problem... But i need to see my pc first (im at work now..)

And i can't try it out untill monday cuz i already gave the card to a friend to test it :)

And will the power connector supply the image?
