Pausing a WU?

It has been a while since I've done any folding, roughly a year. I'd like to pick up where I left off and start messing with the SMP units, however I'm not sure if that is going to work out, hence me asking before I get into something I shouldn't.

My PC normally sleeps while I'm out of the house, but when I'm home it is always on, even if I don't use it. During the time I'm not using it I wouldn't mind putting the CPU to work and for the good cause. The problem I'm seeing with this is I do like to game, surf the web, watch movies etc. How safe, and or what methods could I use to pause a work unit, if at all?

I did check the Folding@home website and it says this:
"Donors should not intentionally stop/pause the FAH Client to manipulate the completion time or wuresult upload time of work units. "

To avoid screwing up their system in handing or allocating units should I just opt out, and not partake? I'd rather not cause more harm than good. What are you guys doing that don't have dedicated rigs committed to folding 24/7?

Some surfing of the subforum couldn't really turn up any results, just threads about losing WU's.

When I game heavily i just shut down my SMP client, and when i have finished i restart it without any problems. I don't use pause though just in case the machine crashes and trashes the WU data files. Surfing the web and watching movie's shouldn't be a problem - you can probably leave the SMP client running. Some "lighter" games will be fine with teh client still running as the clients are designed to only use idle CPU time, and runs at a lower priority than anything else your system might be doing. You should be fine especially with a 920 @3.9. Just remember to register for a passkey for bonus points

If you go with v6.34 just Control C to shutdown the client, and your preferred method for restarting (i have a shortcut on my desktop). v7 is a GUI based client (still in beta though so it is not perfect) and has a pause and quit button

That line about manipulating the completion time is not what you're discussing here. That was directed to those who intentionally pause their folding for the sake of boosting points on a particular day for contests or something similar.

Generally you can stop/start the client at will, although you always run a small risk of the work unit being lost in the process. I stop/start all the time on my primary PCs regardless.

Thanks guys. I currently have the SMP client crunching a WU right :). Now I'm actually starting to think about putting my GTX580's to work. Should I just can the console client and run the GPU Tracker V2?
