I'm looking to put together a computer for GPU-based password cracking/recovery, probably using something like oclhashcat.
Although we're looking to assemble a machine ostensibly for password work, we won't be performing such work 24/7 365, so a machine which is reasonably capable when it comes to performing more CPU/memory heavy data analysis work would be a plus.
There isn't a particularly rigid budget, but something in the area of €4k for just the tower (we're not thinking of racking mounting for now) would probably be a decent guideline.
I'm thinking of getting four AMD R9 290(or 290Xs), probably on an X99 with suitable PCIe slot spacing (something like an MSI X99 Gaming 9). Going to need good air cooling (water cooling's not an option) and a very stable power supply. As previously noted, whilst the primary purpose is GPU password work, a decent CPU/memory setup would help us get the most out the machine during downtime.
What advice would you have regarding such a build? Anyone built something like this before?
What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Password recovery
What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
About €4k shipped
Where are you?
EU
What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
All tower components; case, PSU, motherboard, CPU, GPUs, memory, storage, etc. Don't require a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.
Will you be overclocking?
Probably not.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
In the next couple of months
What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
The ability to take as many GPUs as possible.
Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Not sure what OS we'll use yet, but this can be ignored for now.
