I've come across a rather comprehensive list of GPU passmark results on their website:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

If you sort by rank or passmark results, there are some interesting results. For example, it ranks the GTX 570 as faster than the GTX 660, HD7870, even the GTX 590. However, real world benchmarks shows the GTX 570 as a bit slower than the 7870 and the GTX 660. What are these calculated on and how do they translate into real world comparisons?

Most people suggest to ignore Passmark, it seems. I don't think I've ever seen it in a review.

Just like other rating systems (Windows Experience Index being another example), they're hoping readers are dumb enough to believe that their software is somehow indicative of something and worth buying. You hit the nail on the head in the OP: it doesn't translate to real world comparisons. Applications and support vary so wildly now that you have to test what applications you're concerned with to even begin to generalize a performance comparison.

For gaming performance, the only way to do it is to play the games and tinker with the settings to find what is playable.. No artificial benchmarking suite can sub for that.
