Hello,
Is there any way that this processor (specifically the BX80662I56600K) can be passively cooled?
(assuming smallish case with only the basics on the motherboard: SSD, memory, and obviously the CPU -- no video card nor audio (both onboard).

Noctua NH-C14, Silverstone NT-06PRO would be my choices.

This is the only completely passive cooler I've seen verified by SPCR to handle a full 95w CPU. That means NO airflow whatsoever, all cooled by convection.

But if you're willing to have an extremely low-noise HSF at a much lower cost, this is also an option: Scythe Kotetsu. It's also much easier to fit in a case, and it plays better with DIMM slots than most other towers.

In those cases nope.. none of the coolers recommended by defaultluser will fit. However those mentioned by me above will work as they are specually meant to iTX usage, Specially the NT-06PRO.

Araxie,
Thanks for the heads up, just as i'm writing this, I'm an coincidentally chatting with an E-MINI rep. Some things are obviously lost in translation, but he seems to think the Scythe would work in that case. Is he indeed def wrong? You think its too big?

Oh-- never mind! He just corrected himself! The case can take a cooler up to 11cm (and the Scythe is 16).

Certainly it's wrong, the kotetsu measure 160mm long, a certainly issue in iTX scenarios specially taking into consideration that in those cases the PSU it's just aside the motherboard, just above the CPU cooler area.

Silverstone NT-06 and NT-06PRO are designed for that kind of spaces and work with the PSU airflow. In my opinion that's the best iTX cooler in the market even in passive mode.

How do you think your suggestions stack up against something like the Cooler Master Gemin II M4? I couldnt find noise specs on the NT06-PRO

Are you married to that case, or would you consider other better-designed cases with similar footprint?

The Node 304 comes to mind: a few inches deeper, but similar width and height. Because the PSU is not stacked abover the motherboard, you have plenty of room for a tower cooler:

Even though it's a tight fit for that Noctua, It has plenty of room for a smaller tower cooler like the Kotetsu (this is a user build from SPCR forum):

The Node 304 is also 20 bucks less on Newegg.

No, that is the case to use.

Right now, I'm looking at the Cooler Master GeminII M4, ZALMAN CNPS8900, or the NT06-PRO by SilverStone.
What do you think??
:)

it run circle around the Gemini II M4. in fact you can overclock easily safe with that cooler..

look some results straight from [H] stock fan isn't so great, however its quiet even overclocking..

the defaultluser suggestion it's also very good, that its a great case..

the NT-06 PRO its cooler by a very little small amount.. about 3C-4C however the Zalman (and sorry for not paid attention before) its way quieter... about 8dB quieter (pretty much considerable)
