passively cool E6600

would it be a good idea to passively cool a E6600 with the silverstone NT-06. I'm thinking about getting a lian-li v600 but case doesn't have enough clearence for a fan on top of the NT06. if not does anyone have any suggestions to which cooler i should use?
 
A big Scythe tower-style heatsink might also be appropriate, if you've got the clearance. (technically, the Zalman 7000/7700 aren't passive, although they're very quiet).
 
Obviously a Scythe or tower heatsink will do fine, but hes got limited space due to the V600 lol.

There should still be enough room even for the Ninja. The case is 8" wide, and the Ninja is 6" tall, so that leaves plenty of leftover for the MB tray, standoffs, MB PCB, and socket.

you've got about 3-4 inches of clearance btwn MOTHERBOARD and PSU.


OP - imo, passive cooling and V600 probably won't work very well if at all.

I've heard stories of flipping the PSU fan around and then reversing the fan to make it blow onto the CPU - but i'm guessing it would be pretty warm air - prolly not advised.
 
Yeah,

Zalman or Thermaltake Orbs will do fine there, you wont get really low temps, but what can you expect in a cramped case :)!

Touche--I had forgotten that the PSU is directly above the CPU in that case. It doesn't seem like a real great design choice to me--I wonder why they decided to put it there?

yea - kind of a weird design. i guess they wanted to accomplish the squat low mATX look but still make it compatible w/ ATX mobos...

Many of the older ATX cases worked this way as well. It allowed for more drives in a smaller space. The towers maintained the smaller space of the AT towers before them, but only because the ATX motherboard form factor is so tall.
 
I read in the SFF forums people have been using the NT-06 in their silverstone sg-01 cases with out a fan. I wanted to build a SFF system but from the looks of it there just are any good mATX mobo's for the C2D right now.
