I was wondering are passive heatsinks a big disadvantage over the active ones with a fan? My procs come with passive heatsinks but if it isn't a good solution I will buy active heatsinks.

uhh .. your gonna want to put a fan on that heatsink if it didnt come with a fan............. unless you jsut bought a 100 mhz intel ...... lmao

1u heatsinks are for 1u rack mounts... those cases are freaking wind tunnels...

oh cool I am using a 1U case for my server. So I should fine then?

as long as it has good airflow (a few 40cm deltas) then yes, but it will be really loud

I don't think that cooler would fit my 1U rackmount. but then again the case isn't here so I don't know yet

i didn't read the thread well the first time.. i highly doubt that heatsink will fit in a 1U case.. but that case is probably designed pretty well and the heatsinks might be made for that case specifically.. so i would just see what your temps are, with the normal ones.. and i bet it will be fine...

ok well I did a bit of searching around and the general consensus is that passive is better because it is bigger where as active you have a super hot heatsink that is really small with a fan on top. Now my question is which probably is pretty obvious but I want to check and make sure. Do you think getting new passive heatsinks (I know depending on which one) will perform better than the stock ones. I assume yes. What are you server guy's opinions?
