I have a Tbird (Socket A I believe, right? I just can't remember right now) and was wondering if anyone knew of any passive heatsinks for this chip? Mostly because my dad wants me to turn my PC off on weekends, but I use it, so I want to disguise it so it sounds like its off, and looks likes its off (unhook the power light from the front) but not actually be off. I searched but couldn't find any...the only ones I found were noisy ones.

I'd like one too but you still need some air through the case. Don't try to trick your dad, you may regret it later. Maybe he would go for standby mode, that will give a good amount of savings. Just be sure to save your work first in case of power failure. If that isn't good enough try hibernate. Kind of slow but still faster than a cold boot, and power failures are not a problem.

My Athlon 1.4Ghz Tbird ran very hot, >50C even in a pretty noisy system. I expect that it's going to be hard to get it completely silent.

Why does he want it off? If it's to save power, a little education can go a long way.

Educating a father? Hehe, good luck :p

I guess I was just lucky to have a father open to my opinions and ideas....

No wonder teenage culture revolves around defying one's parents... I would probably agree with it too, if I was treated like a subordinate.

It would need a pretty massive HS/F I would imagine. It's kind of funny you mentioned this because I just put together some old parts for an Athlon Tbird 1.4 and that's a seriously warm chip!

I stuck it in a case with no case fans other than the PSU and idle temps are >50°C with the stock cooler and AS5, with it's noisy little 5000 RPM fan. LOL! That HS is pretty toasty to the touch as well. They should have come with better heatsinks, even the stock Intel C2D heatsink wasn't that bad.

The rig in my Sig with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro has a fan that spins at 900RPMs (using Asus Q fan) and my idle temps are like 37°C LOL! And this chip destroys the 1.4 Tbird in benchmarks, I couldn't even believe the difference (that's beyond the scope of your request though, sorry).

Make sure you get a pretty big HS/F but I would say your still going to want a fan on it. I wouldn't bother trying to trick your dad.

Actually, I'm a senior in college about to graduate in 3 months, so yes, I have educated him many times about certain computer aspects :)

Any luck on a passive HSF? Lets just say I do things on the PC that require it to be on all the time. So thats why. Its really not to 'teach' him, its to shut him up :)
