I am going to be rebuilding my fileserver rig after I get back from Iraq and I am looking for a passive heatsink.
This is going to be on a AMD 3200+, non-overclocked possibly in a LANboy case. I want to try and get this thing as quiet as possible. The Scorpio case is loud as hell with the small case fans and I wanted a small case with at least 5 hdd bays. The 2 120's should do just fine. I was going to see about getting an NV silencer for the 6600 to keep the noice down and cool the card at the same time. Granted I can spend some money on the sink but I dont really feel like spending more on the sink than the case, heh.

Edited-just realized I technically put this in the wrong subforum. Dont see a delete anywhere, can someone move this?

There's passsive coolers availible for Athlon 64's. Just search around. One of those + cool n quiet or manual undervolting = teh win.

Why are you using a 3200 and a 6600 GT for your fileserver? That's still great hardware.

TT Sonic Tower or Scythe Ninja are tops for passive coolers. I chose the Ninja because there is more space for air to pass between the fins. Just remember that passive means that all the heat will radiate into your case. You will need to make sure you have a fan pushing cool air into the case and another one exhausting hot air. The Nexus fans are probably among the best quiet performers I've found.

Also, I foung the Zalman 700 series VGA cooler to be quieter than the NV. They both cool just as well.

I have decided to go with the Ninja, since I wont be running anything in there that is extremely hot. I looked at the xp-90(i think that was it, that thermaltake one) but I didnt like how it hangs over on one side. I am upgrading the case to a Lanboy since its big enough to have 5 hdd's and 2 120's to keep it quiet and cool. Looking at dimensions, the lanboy is actually like a half an inch wider than the p180 and I have seen some sweet p180's with the ninja in it.
When I say file server, its going to run my IM's and email and such and it will be fast enough to run a dedicated server with just a 2 or 3 people on it for stuff like UT and such. I will most likely be putting my hdd's from my externals in it for my movies and music.
Its a socket 939 3200+ I will play around with the settings. Reason I went with the 6600 is because all I have right now is either a gefoce3 ti200 or a 9800pro and both are agp and I didnt like any of the agp mobo's out there anymore. 6600 was only $100 bucks. I didnt want to bring it all the way down to something like a ati x300. Figured putting 40 more bucks in would get me the 6600.

I run the stock heatsink passive, when the CPU is running low throttle. It hovers around 51 degress, with a 39 degree case. Speedfan adjusts fan speed when temperature increases above 55 degrees. It never does when I'm just surfing and not doing processor intensive stuff.
