I have been running a Samsung 214T [S-PVA] monitor for a while. It is a 4:3 display which I much prefer over widescreen and the colors on the monitor are amazing. I recently stumbled across another 214T which I am now using. I might be able to get a 3rd monitor soon, which means I need a new video card to replace this 8800GT which has been serving me well.

These monitors have DVI-D inputs. I would like to get an Eyefinity setup on the cheap (5770 ot 5830) for playing a few games, which would mean I need to use passive adapters. Max performance is not a really big deal, I mostly game on consoles. Are there any "known good" cheap passive adapters that will work for my setup?

form what i have read, it MUST be an active adapter... so afaik, no there are no such animal

You *MUST* use an active adapter. *NO* passive adapters will work.

No ifs, ands, or buts. Active adapter is required, period.

Well there goes my Eyefinity dream

Would I need an adapter for each monitor or could I run one or two of them off VGA cables?

You only need to run ONE display using an active displayport adapter. The rest can be connected directly via DVI.
Keep in mind that there also has been noted that a Displayport to VGA *active* adapter -may- work, but depending on how high your resolution is, it also might not work. The DP-VGA active adapters are significantly cheaper than the DP-DVI active adapters which are $100.

If you are willing to run VGA, hook 2 up with DVI (no adapters) and the 3rd up with DP->VGA (*all* DP->VGA adapters are active - even the $20 cheap ones).

I am fine with running one on VGA just to get it working. If I notice a problem/flicker I can get an active DVI adapter later.

I personally use the Sapphire DP->VGA adapter for my 3rd screen at 1600x1200. No issues with the adapter whatsoever, worked without a hitch.

Accell brand also has some that work. If you live close to a FRY's you can get them there for $30> They will work up to 1920*1200. They have an ATI sticker on the package even.

I live in maine, no fry's or microcenter around me. now that I know I can get by with a $20/30 adapter, I really need to find a third monitor :)

I have 3 of the Samsung 213T monitors in a 3x1 portrait configuration and I love it. I am using an active DP - DVI Adapter. $100 for that was cheaper than buying 3 new monitors. My resolution is 3600x1600. I like having the extra screen height. I tried using them in landscape, but I had to turn my head too far left or right to see the edges of the screen. At 3600, the edges are already filling my peripheral vision.

I used these because I had them, and they work pretty well. No problems with viewing angles. It feels like sitting in front of a big 16:10 screen, except with more than double the resolution.

My dream setup right now would be 3 x 30" 2560x1600 displays though, but that is way too expensive.
