Passive cooling question

Im considering putting a alpha cool Cape Cora 642 ontop of a u2-ufo from mountainmods.com What i was wondering, is, would this be enough to cool a cpu, and a single graphics card? Or should i go with a heater core. I want silence, which is why im thinking passive, and im going to get some ultra quiet fans for the 120mm fan holes, as well as the 80mm ones. I dont think i will be doing any OCing.. if i do, it will be to test the boundries at which i could oc without the temps going too high.

You could probably get a very quiet setup by using a double heatercore with a weapon shroud and using some of the same ultra quiet fans. I recommend getting a heatercore because if you find that it isn't enough cooling you always have the option of speeding up the fans. However with the passive cooler the only way to increase cooling would be to place a big box fan or something blowing over it :) and then all your friends will laugh at your ghetto computer.

I can run my setup passive with only 1 120 aluminum Evercool fan as a exhaust and still get pretty good temps. I'm running dual heater cores in the same case that you're using. And even at a mild OC of 275x9 with all the fans at 7v I get great temps on my system. Heater cores with Weapon shrouds are the way to go.............. :D for silent/quiet extreme cooling.

You will have no problem with the passive radiator you are considering using. If you want the ultimate in passive cooling their is none better than the Aqua Computer Airplex Evo 1800. It is consistently rated #1 in passive cooling. Another good choice would be the Innovatek Konvekt-O-Matic series as well.

thanks TN.. though, I dont want my passive rad to be bigger than 18 x 18 inches (roughly 45cmx45cm,) how big is that AC passive rad?

Could you please post a link to where it was rated #1 in passive cooling, I've seemed to have missed the review somewhere................ :D

I think that will be bigger than you want to go. The dimensions are:

403mm x 618mm x 50mm (15 9/10" x 24 1/3" x 1 31/32") frame.

bigger by about.. 20cm in the second measurement.. thats about.. 9 inches.. yeah, a bit too big.. Oh, and with the alpha cool, if i want to add more cooling power, i can add more profiles to it.. how big is one of the innovatek passive rads (not the tower.. i want to be able to attach it to my case easly)

n/m i found the innovatek passive rads

If you have the capability to add extra units to the Alphacool one then that is definitely the way to go. :D

Check this out (scroll down to find the Konvect-O-Matic Pro and the upgrade kit): www.webshop-innovatek.de/00000094271139704/000000942713b3501/50142494350d4401b/index.html

Saw that about a year ago..................... I've read nothing that has "consistently rated #1 in passive cooling", but what the heck, who cares anyway..............

lol, im not having space constrants, i just want to passivly cool my system. a quiet system during college will be benifcial for me.

you can always control the fans in the rad, i control mine with the mobo....passive is possible, as long as the ambient temp is not bad, and of course you need a huge rad.

i have heard good things from either the Konvekt-o-Matic or the Mora....

another possible rad for you is the thermochill pa160 http://www.thermochill.com/pa160.php
this rad was made with "silence in mind" check it out, i have one on the way and i should have it on monday.

I have a Konvect-O-Matic Maxi. It was cooling a 6800GT and a P4 3.0. I don't know what the temps on the CPU were, but it was very stable and silent.

I didn't pay the MSRP for it though, I got it used :)

i wonder how it would do on an ocing situation? msrp is pretty high. personally my problem with this rads are that they are aluminium, been there done that about 4 years ago, not the best match copper and aluminium = problems in the long run...

Ahahahaa, that made me laugh. At college the least of your worries in terms of noise is your computer ;)

very, very true, but it cuts out on one of the noise sources. And most other noises are inconsistant, which i can sleep with, consistant noises drive me insane (e.g. fans, ticking clock, stuff like that)

As long as you use either the Innovatek or Aqua Computer (and I suppose others) anti-corrosion additives there simply isn't a problem.

Thermaltake has a new product out that would look good in anybody's living room. It is called a Symphony. While not a passive system it does have a noise output of only 16 Db using five 120mm fans in a vertical column. Not so sure how good the blocks are but it looks like a dynamite external cooling solution. :D

I dont really want something that isnt attached to the case in some way. Preferably, i would love to fit a passive rad INSIDE the case.. but, that just isnt feasable with the rads im looking at.

There's lots and lots of other options out there that would fit what you're looking for if you open up a bit, but if you stick with what you're looking at so far, you're pretty limited. .................;) Like I said, I can run my system passive, but I guess it doesn't fit your needs.................:) One heck of a lot cheaper than what you're looking at also.
Good luck trying to find what you're looking for.
Another option is the Swiftech APEX would run passive on a stock A64 3200 Wincherster system cooling just the CPU and on my test system got temps of 34c idle and 46c load. And that radiator will bolt right up to the rear riight 120mm fan holes if you have a newer model case.

it is a problem, most probably a majority of systems wont have any problems, but there will be some, i have been there done that, i truly dont know how long you have been watercooling, i have for years now, and i have seen things with aluminium and copper that are not nice.....what happens is that aluminium is cheaper........but is not better....the best way to explain for me is for example back in the day when i was a student, i use to work for a major airline on the ramp, as a weight and balance agent, and as a ramp team leader, and we had a saying that went "dont just eliminate problems, but eliminate possible problems before they develop, when something can go wrong, it will" and truly now a days there are better products to use than aluminium....
my 2 cents...

thermochill pa 160.....efficient, meaning it uses low cfm low db fans....check it out you dont loose anything by reading about it....
good luck

Oh, im willing to look at other things.. I dont think i saw the thing where you said you could run your system passive.. I would certainly be willing to look into that, because it would also make it fairly easy to do some decent overclocking, since all i would have to do is turn on some fans.. (sorry if i seemed offish before..)

Basicly the first 2 posts explain the easiest and cheapest way IMHO to passively/silently cool your system and still give you the option to OC it when you want to. On my mian rig (Monster Rig) I can run even at a mild OC passive and keep the temps low enough to be safe and I'm cooling both the CPU and GPU. I run my system 24/7 at 275x9 at 1.47 volts with all my fans set at 7 volts and my CPU never goes over 38-40c. If I turn off the radiator fans the temp only goes up another 2c. I just yesterday put the new Swiftech MCP-655 in my system and I can turn it down to the #3 setting for totally silent running and still stay in the low 40's. Granted I have 2 dual heater cores, so if you only use 1 your temps will be higher, but not drasticly. I do always keep 1 intake on each side of the case turned on and 1 exhaust fan plus the PSU fan. If you didn't see the lights on, you'd have to get real close to hear it running. And if I crank all the fans up to full it pretty loud but I have no problem pushing it to a nice high OC and still keep nice cool. The hightest temp I've seen on my system so far is 46c and that was when I was trying to get a 340x9 OC stable............

I did a Google search and came up with this page, I hope it links ok, I'll have to try it to see if it works...............
