Passive Cooling & Q6600 OC'ed

the thermal output of kentsfield is nicht good. You'd be luckey to get stock clocks, I actually suggest an undervolt. Overclocking a passivly cooled system is really impossible.

I suggest you get a nice big 12cm ready cooler (like a scythe or thermalright ultra 120) and mount a noctua 12cm 18dba cooler or 5V yate loon on it. Those things are barely audible.

edit: oh and if you do go with a quiet fan, Thermaltake and ______ (urgh, comon brain work! the name escapes me, they make those really shiney sorta jet-like fans which are cool but offer total bs numbers, things like 80cfm @ 14dba). Both give you complete BS numbers. Don't get fans from either of them (infact, in TTs case, its best just to avoid all together if possible).

a fan probably cools about 400% better AT LEAST than passive heatsink. without a fan the heat would just sit there and wait for thermodynamics to do all the work. not to mention the cpu is constantly creating more and more heat. the fan gets it out of there fast, even a small fan would make a big difference.

Yeah?
Well i didn't hear many bad things about them.
If my case had good airflow could i get away from it?
and by good i mean a Coolmaster 830 with 6 130 fans

including the four on the side pannel? yeah your fine, lol. You can certainly get away with stock clocks, but I don't know how much OC headroom you're going to get. You might consider the CM gemini cooler I suspect that thing would just give rockin temps on a stacker with all 4 side pannel fans mounted.

i was going for quiet is the only thing, not that its an HTPC or anything, i just wanted it quiet. like the rest of my house, i had a case before and it would be so loud, the fan on it apparently was made for deaf people because it was always loud regardless. Then i got a P182. and that thing is super insulated, but now i have a 830, and thats where this idea came from. Anyone know why they stopped making P180's?

you'd get better temps and a quieter system if you were to remove some of those fans and mount a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme w/ a Scythe.

maybe if you rig up a duct of sorts just a little channel to pull air from the heat sink out of the case, but at that point (and if you have that many fans) what is the argument against adding one more?
