OK, so my htpc just is not as quiet as i would like. so i'm taking it passive. aside from possibly the power supply, as the seasonics and enermax both of which i've used before where dead silent to me.

so i'd like to put a passive HS on my 3200 winnie. thinking either the si-120, or the ninja. yet little reserved as i've read reviews that where it is not reccomended to run anything 3200 or above on either of these HS's.

as for the GPU i'm not sure either, might acutally keep the AC cooler i have on there, its dead silent now @ 12 volts, and i could always undervolt it.

so i'm curious if you feel that the 3200 will perform no problem with either the ninja or the si, the ninja is cheaper, yet more people lean me towards the thermalright.

case restrictions should not be an issue as its the ahanix dvine 4 htpc case, quite high and large.

dude passive cooling on an atholon... not a good idea.... you might wanna underclock it. but iv never looked into cpu passive cooling.... so never heard of the ninja and the other product you mentioned...

thats where intel is good, left on there own, and intel processer will get hot, but then stop gettiing hotter. atholons left on there own... will catch fire.... really. if you ignore all threasholds, and remove your fan, itl catch fire. so passive cooling, really not such a good idea...

Damn, talk about FUD. An Intel processor equal to a 3200+ is going to run hotter than the 3200+. I don't know what this joker is talking about. And both CPU's will shut down if they get above a certain temperature. As for running a 3200+ passively cooled, both of the HSF's you mentioned aren't recommended for passively cooling a 3200+. But it all depends on what you're doing with it. If you're running an HTPC like you said, and you've got some good airflow through the case, I bet you could get away with the ninja. Otherwise, you can underclock it until you get the temps you are comfortable with.

If I were building it, I would go with the ninja, and two quiet 120mm case fans for good airflow. I don't know much about mythTV or whatever PVR software you're using, but when I'm capturing video the load doesn't go above 60%. Now obviously if you're transcoding video its going be at 100%, but if you're just capturing, it probably won't be using 100% of your cpu, and the temps would be lower. If the proc got over 60C, I would underclock it until I was comfortable. But that's just me.

The guy has never heard of the Ninja before, of course it's all going to be FUD. :D

I would like to remind him that we're talking about a 3200+ Winnie as in an A64. Maybe this guy is still clinging to his Northwood trying to pretend Prescott doesn't exist. :p

You'll just barely be able to fit the Ninja inside of the D4, the Ninja will just barely touch the top of the case from what I can tell (remember the case is alittle less then 6.5" and the Ninja is about 6" tall). But if you've got Cn'Q running then for sure you should be able to run it passively.

Personally, I would be worried about possible clearance issues with the Ninja so I would go with the SI-120 and a Yate loon, I've got two of them in my desktop right now and the only thing I can hear is the damn HDD.

as was mentioned, just run a yate loon 120mm or even 2 of them, they are DEAD quiet even at full voltage...
same ones as in the link in the post above

i have 3 of them, but my gpu cooler and hdd's are louder than the fans at full voltage.

Err no, they wont. A64 systems throttle just like p4's. Your thinking of XP's.

nice thanks for the constructive feedback.

your right about cutting it close with the ninja, but it will fit, so i thought i might go for it.

i have a coupon for a free silenx fan, so i'll probably get one of those, and the si.

thanks again. should be smooth and silent now, just what i've been waiting for.
