Passive cooler for Conroe?

OK it's all speculation but could one of our thermal experts predict if a passive cooler will work with this chip, albeit a massive one.

I have just took down my reserator and I am not 100% convinced if I can be bothered to rig it up again after the summer.

As long as you are not overclocking and have good cooling in your chassis, then yes you could go with passive cooling if the heat sink is a good design. These chips run VERY cool. It really depends on the ambient temps and chassis cooling.
 
i doubt you will be able to passive cool a conroe. not with a 155mm2 die sized chip running at greater than 2Ghz....
 
I can run passive with a scythe ninja and my 3.2 prescott. So no doubt it will be practical with Conroe, depending on the HS.

Victor Wang was able to run his E6600 ES with a Zalman 9500 with the fan off, accidently.
 
I would say you could cool conroe with passive cooling, but I dont know if you would want to. I would put a passivly cooled conroe in a case with like 4 - 120mm fans... but thats about as extreme as I would go.
 
really, running passive is overrated, imho. an incredibly quiet fan at 5v won't make any noise that you can hear at 6 inches anyway, and it will be significantly cooler.
