Partitioning After Format

Hello all:

I formatted my 400GB Seagate drive through the Disk Management MMC in WinXP but created one huge volume. Is there a way to now partition that space? Do I have to buy a third party tool such as Partition Magic? Do I lose performance in using a 3rd party tool to do this or should I have split it up initially when I formatted the drive?

Did ya put data on it? You could delete the partition and recreate smaller ones. Just make sure you have no data on it (or have moved the data to a different HD).
 
No data yet, but I don't want to have to format this thing again, it took almost two hours.
 
I believe Partition Magic will allow you to resize partitions. Personally, I'd delete it and start over. You don't have to sit there waiting on it, you know ;)
 
Any recommendations on how to split the thing up? I know I want a small 5-10GB partition as a Photoshop scratch disk but I'm not sure about the rest.
 
Are you sure? They indicate that it should be on a separate high performance drive. Should I get another hard drive dedicated to PS? A nice 40-80GB drive shouldn't cost too much.

well I'd think it would be better off on the Raptor drives since they're faster

why not split them up and use one for OS, apps, games, and the other for PS, misc storage?
 
That might have been a good idea had I done it from the beginning but I have formatted my system so many time in the past month that I am sick of installing and reinstalling Windows, driver, patches, programs, etc., etc. so I don't want to have to do that again for a while. But I don understand your point and that would probably have been a good idea but not now.
 
How about a partiton on the big HD to back up any important data on the RAID 0 raptors. Google "Robocopy" and have it setup every night or something to copy your XP profile and any other important info to the large HD incase one of the raptors fails (knock on wood).
