Partitioning a 250GB HD

I know it's mostly personal preference but I figured I'd ask anyway. My previous 250GB drive that seems to have died was partitioned into 4 primray partitions. C for windows, E for programs and games, F for mp3s, and G for media and random stuff.

Should I consider another method? Maybe just Windows on its own partition and the rest as one big drive? Thanks in advance for any input you have to offer.

With the price and reliabilty of modern drives, I don't even bother with partitioning. If you really want seperate drives, just plug another one in....then you'll get some extra safety and performance. Otherwise I wouldn't mess with it.

I have mine setup like this:

C: - Windows, Apps, Games (74gb Raptor, unpartitioned)
E: - Storage (160gb, unpartitioned)
R: - Backup (80gb, unpartitoned)

All seperate physical drives, no partitioning :)

C - 12GB for Windows and installed Applications
D - 60GB for pure storage of music, movies, ISOs, everything.
E - 5GB most of the time empty but it is very useful when want to reformat C drive to reinstall windows. I just drag over all my pictures (about 700MB of pictures) over to this partition along with my bookmarks, documents, desktop items etc. I do this so that I don't have to burn two CDs every time I need to reformat. It's only small, but it is definately a must. Comes in very handy.

Oh and yes I only have one 80GB drive in this PC. I should really get out and buy another because I need the space.

That's cheating, I don't wanna lay down the cash for a Raptor nor do I need one.

I don't need more than one HD right now nor do I want to spend the money on one. I guess I could just leave the 250GB unpartitioned because in reality, those extra partitions are just like their own larger folders.

I think I'll make it more simple than usual and go with a large C partition (100GB) for Windows and Program files/games. Then I can use the other chunk for Music and Media storage(~130GB).

Thanks for the input guys.

Just go with:

1: Windows
2: Pagefile
3: Files
What is this whole Pagefile business and why are pepole suggesting it should be isolated?

I'm I out of the norm for just wanting one 250GB drive for Windows, Games, and Programs or what?

It's not really necessary if you're running 2000 or XP...it was more of a Win 95/98 thing

Ok how about this. I have my new 250GB SATA drive. I also have a 120GB PATA drive that I'm 99.9% certain is in perfect working condition that I can utilized.

In this case what would be the best way to divide/partition/organize: OS, Games/Apps, and mp3s? What should be sepearate, what should go together?

I don't know if this would be correct - but here's what I would do.

Using the 250gb SATA, make a small (40-60gb) partition for Windows, apps, and games.

Use the remainder of the 250gb as a storage partition (Music, movies, personal docs, etc). You can even partition this storage space further based on the type of content (ie Music partition, movie partition), it's really up to you.

Use the 120gb drive as a backup drive - you could even buy an external enclosure for it if you want. I have an 80gb for backup - I use norton ghost to burn weekly backup images of each of my drives to this backup drive.

Or you could simply use it for more storage. The main thing is to have windows/apps/games all running from the same partition to increase efficiency.

Ok, the way you describe that windows/apps/games setup is what I figured would be best but it seems that may not be the case.

I already have a 200GB drive in an external enclosure as my ultimate backup source. I mentioned the PATA drive that I would install internally because of the other suggestions to seperate games on their own drive. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference, I'll probably choose the most simple route and do what you suggested.

Just as an update. I have a PATA 120GB WD as my primary OS drive, no partition. The WD2500KS is also hooked up an I am using it as my "backup" drive. It is also one large partiton. I put my music and a lot of random media on the the 2500KS. For whatever reason, the way the drives are oriented, the 120GB drive is at 26C right now (two spaces from the bottom of the case) and the 250GB drive, sitting at the lowest space in the case is at 39C. Doesn't make much sense to me.

If you install games on a seperate drive, that just means when you reformat your OS drive you have to also delete the game directories from the other drive.

I have all my games, OS, and apps on my raptor because of the obvious speed benefits. Didn't partition because 74gb is just about the perfect size for all the games/apps i use.
