I have recently just installed windows xp pro on my system fresh, i have a 160gig HD and plan on having the partition 20gig system files/ 140gig storage.

My question is on the 140gig storage partition should i enable file and folder compression and what does that actually do or how would it help me? thanks a bunch
 
NTFS compression. Its a judgement call really. I'm runing compression on a few folders on a secondary storage drive containing models,.docs, webpages, .tiff's, wav's etc.

I have not really seen a downside. Just keep in mind that compressed formats (jpg,mp3,mpeg,etc) will not decrease in size much more if at all. So if you are looking to archive the uber pr0n collection you'd probably be better off leaving it disabled. On the other hand if you are frequently modifying uncompressed images, sound files or large documents you may want to try it out.

There was an article on ntcompatible quite a while ago in which the author swore by compression. iirc right after installing windows there was a list of file types he'd go through and compress. All .txt's for example. maybe see if you can find that article for more info.
