Hey guys, I jsut reformatted my computer and installed XP pro, rom xp home. Anyway, I partitioned my drive, so one is about 6GB and the other 67GB and I wanted to install windows on one of my partitions and all my files, documents, desktop etc, on my other partition.

So right now all my stuff is on the 6GB, and the 67GB is empty. I tried moving my "Program Files" and "Documents and Settings" to from C:(my Windows Partition) to X:(My Files Partition) but access is denied or what ever (In
otherwords I can't move it).

I was just wondering, how can I do this.

Remember, I only want windows on C:, I want everything else ("Program Files", "Documents And Settings" etc..) on X:

Cheers,

Honestly you're better off installing all your programs on one partition and then using the other for storage. but for what you want to do...install windows and then anything after that make sure to install on the other partition. I believe your going to have to leave the "Documents and Settings" and "Program Files" folders on the C: partition but you can make duplicates of those on the other partition and install all your stuff to there. Again I'd go with my first suggestion of programs on one partition and everything else on the other.

I have a 40GB hard drive and I used Partition Magic 8.0 to partition C: into about 9GB, and D: is the rest. I have XP installed on C: as well as a couple minor programs, like Windows Media, Real Player, Internet Explorer, etc.

I have all my music, images, videos, and games and programs on D:. It works well for me.

It's nice because I can just reformat my C: drive and leave all my crap alone.

I am using Partition magic.... Thanks I guess I will just make douplicates, but what I was getting at is that when I save something to the desktop, I want it to be on X:, not C:

And since desktop is Part of documents and settings, it is on C: right now.

You could just save all your downloads to My Documents.

What I did was I created a My Documents folder on my larger partition, and just shortcutted my Windows drive to it. It works just like the normal My Documents with the Music, Movies, etc. folders, but all the data is on my larger partition.

You change the target of My Documents to X:\My Documents.

Ok thanks alot, and, as far as your programs go...

You just made a copy of Program Files and installed all programs in there or what?

You can't really copy the Program Files folder to a differrent partition and expect it to work. There is also the registry stuff that it needs to deal with so it won't work if you do it this way.

The easiest way would just be to install whatever programs you want on the other partition. Just set to to install on X: in the installation setup of each program. There some default files that are installed in the Program Files folder, but it is quite small and shouldn't be a problem. Just install all your new programs onto the other partition.
