I have 2 sets of Panaflows 120mm Medium speed. If I stick it on the motherboard header, I can quietly slow it down to whatever I desire without any added noise. However, If I stick it on a 5 1/4 bay fan controller, and attempt the same thing, I get a whiny high pitch noise when I lower its speed. Whats going on?

you sure the noise is from the fan? some fan controllers make a high pitch noise when absorbing a large amount of power... i.e. when the fan is at a low voltage

I put my ear to the fans and they are the source. However I cannot test it now because that fan controller's header blew up on me. Wires burnt to a crisp, finger electrocuted, electric smoke everywhere (awful smell). There were no fans connected to it at the time this particular event happened, just the 3-pin extender, so it mightve been a faulty unit to begin with.

Some PWM (pulse width modulation) fan controllers make strange noises come from fans. Buzzing and such. Which is why people recommend rheobus controllers.

My Vantex Nexus created a buzzing itself, so I replaced it with the Sunbeam Rheobus controller. No fan buzz with this, not sure if the Vantec caused it with my fans because the unit itself was so damn loud.
