Palit 4870 x 2 Issue!

I currently have 2 palit 4870s in my box running in crossfire. A few days ago when I turned on my box, everything was running fine except when I logged into windows, I usually hear my video card fans speed up to 65%.


But this did not happen. I hear them idle at normal speeds, so I go and look into the ati cat control center and boy and behond, there is only 1 video card seen by the cat control center and by device manager in windows. I swap video cards and they are both seen by windows, just not while both plugged in. So my assumption was possibly a driver curruption or some other wierd issue.


So I did a fresh install of vista 64bit. Installed all drivers and the newest ati video drivers. and after, I checked device manager and BAM, both video cards are listed, so I thought I corrected my issue.



So heres another issue that just started, sometimes when I boot my machine, one of the 4870's fans will be at a constaint 100%, while the other one will be idle (before windows even boots) and will stay at 100% no matter what I do.


Has anyone ever come accross this problem with any video cards? Ive delt with hundreds of computers throughout my years and ive never heard of this issue.
 
What doesent make sense is that if I shut down my box and restart, they work just fine? without touching anything.

are you saying one the gpus is showing 100% usuage upon boot in CCC?

If so, this is a common issue with CCC and happens sometimes with me also on my 4870x2. To solve the problem all you have to do is start up an 3d app and exit, the gpu usage should now report correctly in CCC.

No, the 100% fan speed is before windows boots.

UPDATE, I just did a test, and now the system wont give any video when one of the fans is at 100% when I start up.


I have never heard of anything like this! Any ideas?
 
Thats what I inded doing. But are we sure its a video problem to begin with?

Since ive never delt with this issue before, is it possible for it to be a power issue or mobo issue?
 
well to me it sounds like a hardware issue. I've personally never encountered it before.

Take 2nd card out, boot. Does it boot normally? If yes, take out 1st card, put second card in, does it boot correctly? If yes than the problem is likely something software or a power issue.
 
Well boy and behond, I put both cards back into my system, booted. Working just as intended. I have no idea. Im shocked.

Serious question, I'm not being a smartass, what is "boy and behond?"

Is that like low and behold?
