Do I need to make sure the previous coat is dry before applying the next coat? some guides recommend several coats of primer/paint.

Depends... Recoats are generally done within half an hour, or at least 4 hours between (with some 1000grit sanding too).

This prevents a coat from half drying, then being rehit with the drying agent, which causes it to crackle.

Primer can be re-coated within 20 minutes.

And yes, many LIGHT coats. Like 4-5 coats of light colour, rather than 1 full coat (most of the time).
