Does anybody have any ideas on how I would go about painting something but not over the writing?

I want to paint the black face silver, but not over the writing. I've seen someone do it here before, but can't remember where or how they said it was done.
 
I'm wondering too how someone would get the text back without having to screen print them back on.

About the only way I think you could do it is with a decal.
