I have an old 17" CRT l have lying around that i wanted to use with my new pc ill be getting but its beige, i was wondering if regular spray paint will work or do i need a different type of paint for plastic?

EDIT: Im looking for a cheap & easy solution i.e. no auto paint/clear coat
 
What you're looking for is a spray paint called "Krylon Fusion" It is just like regular spray, except that it bond's to plastic. I've used it in the past and I must say it works very well, just as they advertise.
 
Vinyl Dye would work as well.

I've had better luck with Vinyl Dye than with Krylon Fusion. Krylon Fusion goes on a lot thicker and therefore is much easier to chip off. It also softens the pastic. I've painted my keyboard, mouse, and joystick with both Vinyl Dye and Krylon Fusion. The Vinyl Dye is as good as new, and the Krylon Fusion is showing signs of wear.

Don't get me wrong, I've used Krylon Fusion on past projects for myself and others, and I do recommend it over regular spray paint any day (for plastic).
 
well i stopped at a paint shop at luch and asked if they had any vinyl dye judgeing by the look on thair faces they didnt have anyidea what vinyl dye was. but at ace hardware i found some flat black Krylon Fusion. Id perfer flat black so ill try it out. maybe ill post some pics when im done.

PS Do you think i could leave a stencil on and be able to peel it off without chipping?
 
Most auto parts stores, like pep boys, will carry vinyl dye. It comes in a spray can similar to fusion. It also softens the plastic, but it is absorbed somewhat and does not show minor nicks or scratches like paint does.
 
how much does each one cost? I'd really like some to, I've got black speakers, my shiny black case, black keyboard, and then a huge beige 19 inch moniter sitting on a beige stand on my desk. looks so ugly...
 
Do you have to take the CRT apart to paint the plastic parts by themselves or could you just cover the screen and spray away? Would it hurt the monitor if paint got into the holes where heat dissipates from?
 
It probably wouldnt be good CRTs run hot as it is i dont think paint covering the projector tupe would help that. You probably could however just pop of the back and tape the everything underneath and the screen and paint away so you wouldnt have to take it comletly apart. Thats what im going to try.
 
Flat black will look like ass. I would very highly advise not using flat black. Matte black will give it that "Dell Black" look, and gloss black will give it that "gloss black" look. :p
 
yeah ive done some more looking around and have decided to go with vinyl dye hopfully walmart has some cause the auto parts out here dont and anyother major parts store is 2 hours away.
 
I've had a very hard time finding Vinyl dye in the past, infact, I haven't been able to find it at all.
 
I got mine at the Wal-Mart auto section. It is made by plasti-kote.
 
Im very surprised some of the guys have had trouble finding vinyl die. Napa, Pep Boys, Auto Zone...and Walmart as said also has it. Also a little tip...if someone wants to use auto or commercial paint on a case but you dont know what to do for the plastic, ask an auto parts store(or where ever you bought the paint) if they can mix in some flex additive. We used to do this all the time for the plastic and fiberglass panels on cars when I worked for my fathers auto body shop. You still need to use primer first to help adhesion, but the additive thins and softens the paint so it will...flex..lol...and become more chip resistant for platis and fiberglass parts.

Other than the fact that it takes about a year to actually bond.
 
No one has mentioned that it's really dangerous taking apart a monitor. What ever you do, don't touch the black suction cup on the back part of the tube. A lot of power is going though there at all times. It takes years for it to discharge.
 
All that new plastic fusion paint like Krylon fusion and Rustoleum plastic paint ain't worth crap in my opinion, every plastic paint I have used ends up scratching off.

Vinyl Dye is the way to go, looks better, withstands scratching, and is a breeze to use.

I have used both, in fact I just finished a project where I used Plastic Paint instead of Vinyl Dye and ended up regretting the decision.
 
well i finished taking apart the CRT last night and im going to walmart this afternoon for the vinyl dye if i cant kind any ill have to go with the Krylon Fusion hopfully weather permitting ill finish it tonight.
 
Why are you hell-bent on Wal-Mart? Surely there are 3 or 4 autoparts stores within a mile of there. Wal-Mart's sprout small cities around them! Check them all, and expect to pay about $4-$6 per can.
 
I don't know about him, but all the auto part stores around me are staffed by Wal-Mart rejects, and their selection pales in comparison to Wal-Mart and theirs is not very good to begin with.
