Painting a Laptop

Anyone have suggestions or a guide on painting a laptop? I tried, but alas, I didn't really have the time to do it right or completely. So, the painting that was on there has since worn off.

The laptop has a magnesium top on it. I'd like to paint the entire thing silver, however, I'm not sure how to go about applying the paint so that it would last through a good bit of use.

I was originally thinking automotive paint followed up by a few coats of clearcoat...but would really like something fairly permanent.

any ideas would be welcom

apply a thin coat, sand smooth with high grit sandpaper, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.....until you like it. oh, and right before you paint soak your paint can in warm water for a couple minutes to help thin it out a bit.
 
What sort of paint should I use then? Is any brand/type better than another? I was thinking something like Appliance epoxy since it's supposed to be ultra tough, but they don't make that in silver (at least that I've seen).
 
I would suggest using vynil dye (I don't know if that comes in silver though) but it doesn't build up layers like regular paint does. You can generally find it at auto supply stores and such.
 
i wouldn't suggest using vinyl dye on magnesium, just go to Pep-Boys and get some paint. Rustoleum works fine, and make sure you get paint and clearcoat made by the same company.

I painted my laptop Laguna Seca blue (a BMW color) almost 6 months ago. I used acrylic enamel automotive paint that I bought from www.carpaint.com. The results are amazing. I didn't have to use clear coat, and since the paint is automotive quality, it is really really durable, and takes well to a coat of wax every once and a while to get rid of fingerprints. carpaint.com has almost every OEM automotive color of paint available, and they will even put it into a spray can for you if you don't have access to compressed air spraying equipment. I would definitely go this way instead of using rustoleum if you're willing to pay a little more for way better results. Also, you have to sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint. It takes a while to do a good job, but it is well worth the trouble.
