i'm planning on painting my case a cool looking black from the ugly beige color. so my questions are:
what type of paint to use?
where can I find it?

I'm kinda on a tight budget of less than 30 bucks, I can spare 50 bucks if its needed

If your painting to plastic I would recomend some special paint like Krylon Fusion. Theres other brand plastic paints out there too but I used that on my Xbox and it was great. I bought it at Strauss Discount Auto but i'm sure lots of car places have it. A little pricy but maybe 7$ / can.

Remember this if you want it to turn out good. Do not just clean the surface and spray, that will look horrid. Take the time to sand, wet sand, primer it.. then wet sand again, primer again, we sand.. paint one coat, wet sand, paint 2nd coat, lightly wet sand, paint 3rd coat, then clear coat it and wax... :)

if you want best possible sand final paint coat with like 2000 grit, it'll lose the shine but if u spend the time to buff the shine back into it it'll be like glass :D

well I have sand paper, but don't know whats wet sand or primer, i'm a first timer at this. The front of the case is plastic but the sides are a metal, I think its alluminum though.
One more thing, can I buy those plastic and alluminum spray paints in homedepot?

sunmaster, When I looked homedepot had some stuff but not many colors of it so take a look. Wet sanding is sanding, but you get paper wet and like your sanding in a thin layer of water. Theres special paper for it but seems like normal paper is more or less fine too. Priming should definitly be done. Its special paint labeled primer, usuualy gray in color. Put 1-3 coats of that on first before painting the color on. The more thin coats you do, better the outcome.

thx guys, I appreciate the replies
ima gonna get all the stuff I need from homedepot tommorow, hopefully they have black, or at least a red. Well, bare with me here, just one more ques about primers. Does it matter what kind of primer you put on, what paint brush do I use, and will putting masking tape on areas you don't want painted a good idea?

Spray Paint Everything!!!!

awwwwww :( but I wanted to preserve the commemoraltive compaq presario name on it, I bought the case when compaq was a really really good brand name. Too bad compaq sucks now

yea well truth is if you want your outcome to not look like crap u better spraypaint it :D

alright....... :( but about that primer thing, is there any specific type of primer?
when I eventually get done with at least the front cover, I might take a picture and post it.

yea, actualy that you meantion it theres plastic primer too. you could probably get away with standard primer but if you see the plastic stuff go for it to be extra safe.

k thx for your post guys, so far i've sanded it and wet sanded it and the thing is smoother than than my rig playing 150 fps on ut2004 with everythign turned up
ima have to go to sleep now, i'l prime it tomorrow.

Vinyle dye for plastic
Duplicolor paint for metal
You can find them in Automotive stores but I get mine from Walmart. :D

well i've just finished painting the front of the case for the first time. The guys at home depot said that you didin't need to prime it, and it actually looks cool. don't know how to post pics, but i'l try once the case dried

::sigh:: never listen to the people at homedepot.....priming may not be necessery with all paints (such as krylon fusion) but it will ALWAYS turn out better if you do use primer.
