paint cracking?!?

Hey all, been lurking for a few weeks and decided, on a whim, to do a paint job on my old Toshiba Satellite 1135. After taking it apart, ect. I did a white base coat with Krylon Fusion - it looked pretty good and after a few coats i let it dry then taped it to do a couple of black stripes down the front with a can of American Tradition Plastic Enamel.

The problem is, about half a minute after i sprayed the black down, it started cracking against the white and i dont' know why. Don't know if it's because it's two different brands, didn't clean it well enough before i applied the black or what. Anybody seen/ heard of this before? and if so, what should i do to fix it?

I had the same thing happen on a CRT monitor. I think Krylon Fusion just sucks. I have had better luck with the shitty wal-mart $1 cans...

oh, man, bummer... if that's the case i'm all ready screwed over, since i did the entire thing with the krylon first. I'm waiting for the black to dry before i sand it down, clean it up, and apply another coat. Just hope the lacquer i got doesn't do the same thing

Your problem is you didn't prep the area properly. After you did the white, you should tape off your lines (though I'm wondering if the white will even stay on when you try to rip the tape off). Scuff the place where the lines go. Prepsol/wax-and-grease-remover/rubbing alcohol it (wipe down the area you plan to paint). You probably skipped the prepsol part which is why the paint is reacting.

For now, let the reacting part dry, sand everything down again, reapply the white, and do the rest properly this time.

Also, krylon is not the problem. It's the painter that is the problem. The paint wouldn't be on the shelf if that's all it ever did.

Though I am a newcomer to case modding, ect. I am still a being of a resonable level of intellegence approximately on the same level of your own, so I would appreciate it if you didn't talk down to me.
I was very careful to clean the area before I painted with the white, was very careful to clean the area before the black as well. However, I must admit I did absolutely no research into methods before hand, a huge mistake on my part (but what can I say, I got really excited), so I was ignorant to the types of cleaner to use and have, in fact, never even heard of prepsol or wax&grease cleaners. I did, however, use a lens cleaner that is pure robbing alcohol, so it seems to have done an okay job.
Of course I taped off the lines; I don't know what you were imagining, but I was not trying to freehand vertical stripes with an open nozel can of spray paint. I am insulted most by the idea that you consider me such a bumbeling, ignorat, sub-human creature that I would fail to do such a simple task as tape off the lines I am trying to paint, or that I would somehow fail to let the white paint dry before applying tape or otherwise insure the tape wouldn't rip off the paint. Though very new on the scene, or whatever, I do have a level of common sense comprible to any intellegent creature.
Just because you have more experience in these techniques, do not think for a minute that makes you a better person than me. I would apprechiate it, next time I ask for advice, that you remember even you were new to these things, and to offer helpful solutions rather than turning your nose up at my simple ignorance. And if you want to make fun of the plethera of spelling errors in this message, go ahead. As my old english teacher used to say, "I'm not a spelling major."

Wasn't talking down to you, sorry about that. Whenever paint doesn't work as it should, it is the painter that is the problem. On my batman case, the reason I had fisheye's so many times were due to my stupidity and not properly cleaning the surface.

As far as the tape goes, I mentioned the tape lifting paint off because it is a common problem even after the paint is dry. I assumed because you didn't properly prep the white (for the stripes), you probably hadn't prepped underneath the white also. I didn't think for a second you'd be painting without taping.

I think you're reading into my post a bit too much man. Just letting you know what to do so it's right you know?

i guess i was just looking for helpful advice and not a flame war. the big problem with the enghish language is that one word can have sevearl meanings, and when it's typed out, it's rather impossable to infer tone and emphasis. guess i misread your words as condensending and am pleased that was not your intention.

but yeah, i just sanded some the problem areas where i'll repaint. I'm working within a highly constrained budget so i'll see what happens if i just use the rubbing alcohol as a cleaner. it's not the whole case either, it's just a few weird areas. I also decided to scrap the homemade stencel and just settle for some plain black lines, as the stencil came out like a pile of sh*t on an undisturbed fresh blanket of the first winter's snow.

Thanks for the advice though, and next time i feel like modding something i'll be sure to do the research before hand

yeah, the brands are different, the types could be as well; the krylon is for plastic bonding, since the case was plastic, and the enamal was essentially multipurpose with plastic stuff listed. i have no clue as to the differences in chemical composition, or even the basic makeup. I was just grabbing stuff for plastic and hoped none of this would happen, but oh well...you know what they say.
