Someone wanna recommend a good guide on the function and use of Page Filing? I know that it makes part of the hard drive memory work similar to RAM, but I'm interested in exactly what it does, and what's the best way to find the amount of memory to allocate to page filing.

Anyone?

Yes, the page file is the file Windows uses to extend the physical RAM.

General policy used to say make the page file 1.5x your physical memory. But if you have a low amount of memory, say 256 MB, and you're running XP, you're better off doubling or tripling your page file.

To access your page file, go to System Properties, advanced tab, performance options and it will display your current page file size as well as let you change it.

If you have alot of memory, try running a small page file. If you have ALOT of memory, try running no page file. If you make it a fixed size, your computer will run faster as Windows doesn't have to constantly recalculate the size of the page file. If you have two hard drives, put the page file on the non-system drive, that will improve the speed.

Win2k and later will not let you run without a page file without some reg tweaks i believe And i've had issues on my box with 2gigs of ram running with no page file.

No, I disabled the page file on my Win XP box with no registry tweaks.

Oh god, not another page file thread. :(
You can disable it all you want, it will create one of 20Mb no matter what you do.

My system hates Virtual Memory, for obvious reasons. Diasabling is best solution for me, It really is a good idea to have some, tried, repeatedly, crashed windows every time.

MY PERSONAL TWEAK THAT WORKS FOR ME EVERYTIME ACROSS VARIOUS PC'S = Play some games/run some apps/do your everyday thing you intend to do on the PC. Finally CTRL + ALT + DEL and check your Commit Charge Peak. Set your Page File A little bit over that size and you're set.

Sorry for the caps. :)

Are there any disadvantages in having too big of a total paging file other than wasting HDD space. I have 384megs of SDRAM, and my paging size is currently 2x my ram.
