Mods: Feel Free To Move This To a More Apporpreite Section, I was split in my decision of where to post.
Lately, over the past week, I have been getting popups saying that I am running out of virtual memory and that windows is increasing the size of the page file. The wierd thing is, I am not doing anything that in the slightest bit should even use 1/4 of my memory (I have 2 gigs). Then sometimes after windows increases the size of the page file, my system will lockup, and applications I have up will give me errors saying Instructions at referenced memory cannot be read, and the applications crash.
Here is the sequence of events from start to finish as taken from Event Viewer.
1. Application popup: Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low : Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more information, see Help.
2. Application popup: Windows - Out of Virtual Memory : Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that Windows runs properly, increase the size of your virtual memory paging file. For more information, see Help.
3. Application popup: 1. My Chemical Romance - Teenagers - Winamp [Paused]: winamp.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x12402bea" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
4. Application popup: rundll32.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.
5. I beleive this error had something to do with the failure of my applications.
The server {73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
6. I am aware that photo editing can consume vast amounts of memory, but I wasn't editing anything.
Application popup: GIMP: gimp-2.4.exe - Application Error : The exception unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) occurred in the application at location 0x7c915321.
Click on OK to terminate the program
7. Application popup: firefox.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x6001285f" referenced memory at "0x05f5c000". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
8. Application popup: firefox.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x605833b5" referenced memory at "0x05f70000". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
9. At this time I did a hard shutdown.
I can't think of anything I did in the past week to cause this.
Is this a bad stick of memory? During bootup, it recognizes both sticks of 1gig each.
I occasionally do some not so legal software downloading over peer to peer networks, so I suppose there is a slight possibility that this is some kind of malware that is using my computer's resources as a zombie, however I don't notice any slowdown prior to the actual crashing and errors.
