Are there any software firewalls that can prioritize packets according to type/program? I know of the d-link 4xxx routers and their gamefuel feature that gives game packets the VIP treatment and i was interested in trying to find a similar software solution. Basicaly i want something that allows my game ping to stay sub 50 whilst i have downloads going on in the background.

Thanks
chuck

search for QoS... although most hardware that can do it effectively is probably somewhat costly

I don't think you would be able to max out your download without reaching intolerable pings however a QOS router should help.

You could always build a smoothwall box (www.smoothwall.org). The new 3.0 version has QoS (Quality of Service) built in which is what you are talking about. QoS prioritizes packets.

and it is not going to be found on a "software" firewall you install on your PC you are using because QoS is meant for the whole network, not just on your PC.

Not sure if this will help, it's not a firewall. But if i wanted to prioritize connections i use Netlimiter.

This software lists the running applications, and the connections they're using. You can then set how much banwidth you're willing to give them.

Useful because Torrents tends to suck all my bandwidth, and by choking uTorrent, i can set aside some bandwidth for my other applications.

Yes. The DLink DGL-4500 and it's GameFuel allow you to do this. You set it up right in the router.

DLink has a simulator online if you want to look it over.

DD WRT on your router at home.. QoS FTW. If you dont have a router then i dont have any good suggestions. sorry.
