i've already checked this thread and have done everything suggested
i have a 3.2GHz S478 P4 and have recently had issues...specifically BSODs (different errors everytime), freezes, crashes with overclocking under vista (XP had no issues for 18 hours of dual instances of Prime95 @ 240FSB = 3.84GHz but vista does). sometimes these issues would happen under intense gaming, other times while i'm reading a post in a forum and doing nothing else with the computer it would suddently BSOD.
after a format and fresh install of vista, P95 failed @ 240FSB sometime in the first 2-3 hours. the rig remained stable for 26h14m (i stopped it) in prime95 @ 238FSB using small FFTs in one instance and large FFTs in the other, both set to priority 10. i disabled the sidebar and vista by default has no screensavers running after a fresh install. since starting P95, i hadn't done anything on the computer except moved the mouse to make sure the CPU was still alive...is this sufficient for testing the CPU? i'm pretty sure my memory is ok since its rated at 275FSB and memtest passed @ 250FSB or 4GHz for about 8 hours before i stopped it myself.
objective: i want 100% stability...not that i've got my computer hooked up to a life support machine but my rig's main purpose is gaming, work related emails, office 2007, photoshop, video encoding etc. and every system crash/lockup/bsod screws up my windows installation which takes ages to set up the way i want it. this time i am willing to put in the necessary time to test the system to its limits, and then set it and forget it...currently testing using memtest86...any suggestions on the next step?
my temps are usually no higher than 52C and increasing the voltage doesn't help (it only increases temps) so i've left it at 1.4V which is the max rating for my CPU and two notches above the lowest setting in the BIOS.
Betrayer00GT: i know you understand P95 better than most...i would be most grateful for any advice you or anyone else may have. cheers
Edit: are OCCT or Orthos prime any more thorough at stress testing the CPU comparatively to Prime95? i just want that peace of mind so that next time there's a system crash, i know the hardware isn't at fault.
