Has anyone tried the encryption feature of the Intel 320 SSDs on a P8P67?

I cannot find any mention of ATA password in the BIOS manual.

That's because this board like many many others does not support SATA Security Extension feature set. Means no SATA master and user password support.
But I'm using Intel 320 with encryption enabled on P8Z68 anyway. It is more tricky and no so convenient.

I guess you are booting from another drive on a lightweight linux, using hdparm and then rebooting?

Yep, You've done your homework.
Good thing: Intel PCH controller on Asus boards does not freeze ATA locked drive during boot
Bad thing: Intel PCH controller on Asus boards freezes ATA unlocked drive during boot.
So security state manipulations require hot plugging.
