I go and overclock the CPU to 3.6ghz by setting the CPU ratio to 9 and having the frequency 400. What I don't understand is a little bit shortly have I login the multiplier jumps down to 6 and im left with 2.3ghz. Why is it doing this? I set the multiplier, why is it jumping down on its own?

That is C1E, you can turn it off under CPU configuration in the bios. It is used as a power saver when the cpu is in a idle state.

It's speedstep, it's normal, it saves you power and heat, leave it on. Search the forms for C1E or speedstep, you will have allot of reading.

Think of it like a car, you come to a stop light, you push in the clutch and brake, your not moving or doing anything, so why would you have the gas down? It would only use more gas and make more heat, same idea with this.

Ok, also, I can't seem to overclock my e8400 anymore than 3.6ghz without it giving me the blue screen. Do I just need to increase the CPU voltage more in order to overclock it more? Right now its 3.6ghz at ~1.35v. What should be the limit about for how much volts I give it?

Try increasing Vcore and NB Voltage

Also watch what your ram is going up to. (ie: if you have ddr800 and you are trying a 425 FSB with a 9 multi you would be trying to push your ram too far without changing the link(

Ok, ill try that. But pushing the ram too far without changing the link? How do I do that?

Whats your FSB and multi? What speed ram are you running 800 or 1066? What are you running the ram at? What kind of volts are you feeding the RAM, NB etc? Temps? The more info the better.

As far as how many volts you can run you should try and keep it under 1.3625v for everyday use. Intel has the specs here.

i'm surprised you have to raise the vcore that high to get that oc stable. leave it 400fsb and make sure your ram is at 800mhz...you can verify using cpu-z. this combo will be more than enough power unless your goal is super e-peen. in the asus bios look around for something referring to the strap or fsb:dram ratio and change to unlinked. then manually set your ram speed to 400mhz. that will give you 3.6ghz on your cpu and 800mhz on your ram. if possible lower your vcore until its unstable...i have the same cpu with the C0 stepping and i can leave my vcore at stock 1.23. as always though ymmv

Here is my BIOS settings currently. Im running with DDR2 800. My temps are very low. (Below 40C)

So your trying to run your DDR800 at 915, probably your problem, where it says 915 down it until its cloes to 800 or lower if nesc. Your ram may not be able to handle the 915 and is probably the cause of your BSOD.

If you really want to hit 915 on the ram, you definitely aren't going to get it at 1.84v on the DDR.

With the Asus P5Q, when leaving the voltages at auto, it typically overvolts them not leaving them at stock when OCing. It most likely is what crawlgsx stated above, being the RAM holding you back. I'd verify what the RAM is stated to work at to begin with, your sig only says XM2 not whether it is DDR2 667, 800 or 1066. Also 1.84 is probably too low, Most ram above 900Mhz is 1.9V minimum. To verify if it is your ram, Download Memtest86+, it is available on a BootCD, and usually memory errors show up in one or two passes (can take 1-3hours a pass). I may be wrong, but the default voltage for that chip should be 1.25 not 1.125 may also be a concern.

Try raising your FSB Termination and CPU PLL voltages.

Indeed, but also select the DRAM Frequency, it will give you a list of speeds, select the slowest one (1:1 ratio).

Also, are the temps (40C) load or idle?

actually, 1 core is 38C and other is 35C at idle. Also, triage, my RAM is DRR2 800 xms2

Hey Gamer, Actual part numbers on the RAM would narrow this down better, but a quick search on Newegg (I know its not exhaustive) Lists 3 XMS2 kits that are DDR2 800 in a 2x2GB configuration. @ of these default to 5-5-5-18, the "DHX" model will run stock at 1.8V the Non-DHX (Black heat spreaders) requires 1.9V default. chances are, for the 118Mhz OC your running, You need at least 1.9V for the ram to be stable.

According to a guy over at another forum I read, The average kit for these modules maxxed out at about 896 1.9V stable, more voltage did not affect stability. The ram would run upto about DDR2 960 but would not be near stable. Again, this is not first hand information, but I tend to trust the source :)

My bad, CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - Retail

Thanks for the model number. Your Ram definitely needs more voltage. to even run at 800Mhz, corsair states that RAM needs 1.9v (or at least newegg quotes their specs as stating that).
Brand CORSAIR
Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5
Type 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Tech Spec
Capacity 4GB (2 x 2GB)
Speed DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency 5
Timing 5-5-5-18
Voltage 1.9V
Heat Spreader Yes

Your currently running them 118Mhz OC'd while undervolting them. It is possible that it will work, but highly unlikely. Try bumping the DRAM Voltage to 1.9-1.96 and see if that helps you get any higher.

Also, Like I mentioned before, your CPU Voltage might be a bit low, that screen shot of yours lists it as 1.125V, the proc stock I believe is 1.25V

Also here is a quick rundown of my "Ai Tweaker" page:
Ai Overclock Tuner - Manual
CPU Ratio Setting - 09.0
FSB Frequency - 450
PCIE Frequency - 101 (Have issues with my video card if I don't bump it up by 1 while OC'ing)
FSB Strap to North Bridge - 400 (Running the Ram 1-1)
DRAM Frequency - DDR2-900Mhz
DRAM Timing control - Mine's manual you may want to stay with auto
5-5-5-15 @ DDR2 900
DRAM Static Read Control - Enabled
DRAM Read Training - Enabled
MEM. OC Charger - Enabled
Ai Clock Twister - Moderate
Ai Transaction Booster - Auto
-------
CPU Voltage - 1.325
CPU GTL Ref - Auto
CPU PLL Voltage 1.54
FSB Termination Voltage - 1.26
DRAM Voltage - 1.9V (This will need to vary based on your Ram)
NB Voltage - 1.26V
SB Voltage 1.10
PCIE Sata Voltage - Auto
Load Line Calibration (Helps stabalize CPU Vdroop, May cause chip degradation over time) - Enabled

Hope this helps, I'm Running the Same Mobo (P5Q Pro) and Proc (E8400 E0) so these settings may or may not work for you. If the system does startup, I would run a memtest pass immediately, your proc should be stable at these settings, but your ram may not.

Edits were because I can't type

That looks really for a base of what to set everything up as. Nice, you got yours over 4ghz. So far I can only get mine at 3.6ghz while having it stable.

I can get the FSB upto 530 (x9 multi 4.77Ghz, 1.36-1.39V) and load windows, but past that it starts locking up on the Gskill Pi Blacks I was running. North bridge, PLL, and FSB voltage bumps past what I'm running currently have not helped stability, but will be able to say for certain when I remove the Mem Cap. Have a Kit of CellShock D9's coming in next week, will remove the memory cap. Damn shipping from Ireland takes forever ><
