p5n-e and e6600 not overclocking well, why?

I set the vcore and all that stuff up properly, but they don't run stable past 2.9ghz.

I've tried it on 2 separate motherboards and cpus, same model.

Any ideas?

well if it doesn't run stable then it's not set up properly. what PSU are you using? make sure you have plenty of power if you are expecting to be able to OC.

Same model of what? Did you try a pair of mobos and a pair of cpus? What are the batch #s for the cpus? How are your load temps?

same model mobo and cpu..

purchased 1 month apart. temps are fine, way under 65c, like 40c, 45c load @ 2.8ghz.

500watt cpu powering mobo, 8800gts640, cd drive 1 hd.

It's bugging the crap out of me what's wrong here...

oh and thanks for you help :)

how about actualy posting some information. like voltages and bios settings, versions, as well as RAM.

Are you sure it's not the ram causing the problem? Have you slowed it down to compensate for the FSB increase?

post CPU model info, RAM brand/model info, fsb frequency, memory setting (linked or unlinked), memory mode, memory frequecy, memory timings, cpu vcore voltage, ram voltage. make sure that you have disabled all of the options for cpu power management, spread spectrum, etc. the more info you give about your bios settings the more help you will get.

you are borderline on having sufficient power with that 500w PSU, and it's likely that it doesn't actually put out 500w.

e6600
asus p5n-e
1350
4-4-4-12
vcore-1.37v
ram-2.1v
spread spec off
rest of the things peeps suggest to turn off are off.

power supply is running clean.

Bigger PSU? Really?

No, the PSU isn't the problem...

What's your RAM speed in CPUZ?

I'll tell you tomorrow or tue, when the new parts come in...

I had set the ram to stock, 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2.15 or so volts...

it's corsair ram, apparently some model that won a ton of awards in 2003 or 2004... I'll try to find the model number too, it's all set to stock for that model, the ram may have a bit more juice added to it. 05v maybe.

seeing as you still havnt posted what RAM you actualy have (the brand name and speed you have it at means nothing we need model number or rated specs), going on the fact it won awards in 2003/2004...and this is 2007... this is three or four years old? this could very well be the problem. but i have no way of telling.

You don't need to reply to this thread anymore, someone less.. can reply, both of your replies have been trollish.

I said I'll post it in a day or 2.

This board is supposed to be VERY finicky about what type of ram you have. I have your same setup but with a different brand of ram. I would try adding voltage to your ram and also your cpu (this board seriously undervolts the cpu, especially under load) Check cpuz to see what volts your cpu is getting in windows. Also, to rule out possibilties try running your ram 5 5 5 timings just to test. The culprit may very well be that this board does not like your ram (I believe I read that corsair and this board have problems together)

really long thread over at anandtech about this board. Have you tried increasing the voltage to your northbridge? They recommend upping it for anything over 3 gig. Hopefully some of this will help. YOu should be able to get at least 3.2

Thanks man, awesome reply. I wish this forum had a ranking system I'd rank you. I found the paper:

Here is the ram:

corsair ddr2 XMS2 2gb dual chan.

http://www.corsair.com/corsair/products/specs/TWIN2X2048-6400PRO.pdf

TWIN2X2048-6400PRO
XMS2-6400 2048MB 5-5-5-12 2X240 DIMM Platinum XMS2

I can't get the cpu-z stuff just yet I'll be able to in 1 or 2 days.

What revision is your ram? If it's a rev 1.x kit, then it has Micron, so you should be safe.

I'll just go ahead and copy the stuff from Corsair's forum.

I'd suggest setting the ram to Synced in BIOS, and setting ram voltage to the 2.25v or whatever setting. With the ram set to Synced, you'll be running the ram at 375mhz, which should take that out of the equation, if just for testing your CPU.

I'd set cpu voltage to at least 1.45v, as the vdroop on this board is awful.

What exact PSU are you running, as a 500w may or may not be enough, depending on who made it. For an 8800 series card, there are only a few 500w PSUs that I would run on mine.

If you're going to upgrade your PSU, and thinking about spending $120 on the PSU you linked to (going from NewEgg prices) then you should spend an extra $18 and get the SilverStone 560w Zeus PSU. For the money, you can not beat this PSU.

I RMA'd the ram, I think it's the ram...

I bet its not, I have the corsair xms2, I am running my 805d@3.6ghz, default voltage on the ram, and my processor at 1.31volts. A quality PSU will go a long ways. Have you tried to upgrade the bios at all? I am running the most current one off of the asus website, and, with this release as opposed to the first one that came with the board, I was able to hit another 100mhz no prob on my proc.

My only complaint with this board, is with every monitoring software I find, I get a different reading on voltage, and they all fluctuate, even at idle.

And that's when you know it's time to buy a digital multimeter. :D
