P5N-D causing overclock issues?

I've got a p5n-d motherboard from asus, and a q6600 quad core at 2.4 ghz. I've seen online that several other people have overclocked this combo successfully (3-4 ghz on air alone), but virtually nothing I've tried has worked. I've read various sources and tried various voltages, first what they suggested to others and then somewhat more generous, but I simply cannot take it higher. The highest I've managed to overclock and it boot at was 200 mhz more on the fsb, but even then it went to a blue screen.

I've heard that the bios I had were not great for it, and as such I've updated them. But I'm still having no luck. Is it possible that the newer bios are as well? Anyone here successfully overclocked this combo before?

Many thanks for any help
