When I press the power button on my pc, it takes 12 sec before I see an image on my monitor. Is this normal? The fans speed up heavily the moment I press power. When they slow down, I see the energy image which is around 12-13 sec. I updated the bios, but that did not speed up the time. Overall boot time is about 36 sec from the moment I press power.
My motherboard is a p55m-ud4, hdd is intel ssd g2 and video card is gtx 260 55nm. Anyone else have this issue? thanks

12 seconds is long for a desktop machine. I have seen this on server boards however. Usually due to having a lot of ram. Sometimes do to the bios having a problem of some sort.

That is normal.

Do you think I should try to rma the motherboard? Other than the long boot everything seems ok.

The long boot is a concern, but if nothing else is wrong with it, I don't think that an RMA would be possible.

Do you have AHCI or RAID enabled for either storage controller?
Have you tried loading optimal settings for the BIOS?
Have you tried loading the default settings for the BIOS?
When do you hear the POST beep? 12s before you see anything onscreen? or right before you see stuff onscreen?
Have you tried another vidcard?

If none of those suggestions improve time to POST, I'd RMA the board or at least talk to Gigabyte support about it.

Have you tried another vidcard? I only have one video card :(

I'm going to try calling gigabyte.

I also realized that my bios is only showing two gigs of ram when I have 4gb! I am using windows 7 64bit. I tried both sticks of ram individually in each slot. Both work and boot from slot 1, but neither in slot 2. Windows says 4 gb with both installed but it says only 2gb usable!

Hmm it does sound odd about your fans taking that long to slow down. It should be POST, fans at max for 1-2s, then back down to normal speed.

What did gigabyte support say? if they have no worthy ideas, rma the board. let them know EVERYTHING you've tried beforehand, to minimize the lag time between responses.

The guy said that the boards aren't supposed to boot with 1 stick of ram in the second slot. Also the post should only take about 5 sec. He told me to take the battery out and put it back in, this may have shortened the time by a sec. He also asked if I had a loose standoff . Nothing worked so he told me to go to the gigabyte site and ask for a rma. I hate that I have to pay for shipping and wait two weeks. This build has been nothing but trouble. Here are some things that have happened.

1. Had probs getting the stock cpu heatsink to seat properly. Ended up buying hyper 212 plus, which fixed the temps
2. western digital elements external stopped working. Fixed by removing the external case
3. Ram failed in prime95, had to rma. Got rma, now have to test the ram again when I get the mb replacement.
4. PC does not boot fast enough
5. Bios/windows does not show the right amount of ram.
