I have 3 or 4 P4's sitting around, and I'm trying to decide the best one to use in a specific machine. I have a P4 2.8 (I think) HT w/ 800 fsb in this machine. The mobo only does 533 though so it's running at 1.6ghz. I'm wondering if I'm better off at 1.6 w/ HT or using a 2.4ghz chip w/o HT. Also, is there an easy way to tell if a chip has HT without plugging it in? I know the bottoms between the pins is different on the chips I have (brown chips, or brown and yellow checker). Thanks for the help.
 
2.4 would be MUCH faster than a 1.6 w/HT

1st its a 50% faster (2.4 vs 1.6) which will be a HUGE difference.

2nd for HT to work well you need lots of bandwidth to keep both "logical" cpu's fed. So with a 533 bus and single channel ram HT's benefit would be very limited.
 
If its an 800fsb chip, it has HT. If its a 533fsb chip other than a 3.06ghz, than it does not have HT. In my opinion the 2.4ghz non HT chip is faster, but if I was in your situation I'd just buy a used i875 board and run the 2.8c.
 
If the board only supports 533 FSB, it may not even support HT. Doesn't HT need BIOS support to work properly?
 
HT is working right now I assume, because task manager shows two threads. Still, I will switch it out for the 2.4 tonight.

I'm not really looking to buy an 875 (unless the price is very low), I have an 865 w/ 800 fsb that I have another chip in, and a 925xe with a 670 chip in it. I just wanted to know what chip would be best for this 533 board. I apreciate the help.
 
Well I just checked and unfortunately all four P4 2.4ghz chips I have laying around are 800 fsb. :(


Maybe I will try to pick up some 865/875 boards. I was looking at shuttle barebones systems too...
 
get a new mobo and sell the old one. there;s no reason to run it at a fraction of the speed when you are capable of alot more

turn that frown upside down Charlie Brown. 2.4C's were great overclocking chips. Mine does 3.6Ghz and is as fast as just about all the current top end processors from Intel...

You need a decent overclocking motherboard, then try out each one of those 2.4's to see which one overclocks the best. You've probably got 4 chips that will all do 3Ghz at 1000FSB, and probably 2+ that will do 3.2+Ghz... and maybe a cherry in there that will do 3.4-3.6Ghz!!
 
Are there any good overclocking boards that I might be able to score for cheap? Anything to look for other than Asus/Abit (not that I wouldn't be happy with those)? Also, is 875 gonna be my best bet?
 
abit IS7's are pretty cheap, i got my IS7-E for 50 bucks, and i865 was a pretty dang good overclocker.
 
That 2.8 you are talking about is probably a Northwood... (I.E. GOLD)

Well not really gold, but they are outstanding processors when talking intel anyway.

I would get a board that can handle it and you will be happy!
