i opened up this 5 year old computer and that is the mobo that i see. i;m planning on upgrading this computer for little brother. definatly a new case, fans ran and video card upgrade...but this is the hard part...i wnat to upgrade the CPU but i have no idea what kind of cpu is compatitble with this mobo. i understand that it;s a 478 and well most of the old 478's would but what about the "newer" northwood cores.

i can't believe that i just used newer and northewood in the same sentence.

i would appriciate any help i can get.
 
Your best bet is to haul it all to the garbage. When brand new dual core processors with a 3 year warranty can be purchased for $76 and you can overclock them to 3 GHz, there's not much use wasting too much time or money on old technology. If you plan to buy a new graphics card then you might as well buy a newer board that supports PCI-E and a socket 775 processor.

Agreed, the most cost effective upgrade would involve replacing the motherboard in addition to the CPU. Note that the board requires an AGP video card, which is an especially difficult purchase to justify given current trends.

Just buy a cheap 775 mobo + E4xxx + PCI-E video of your choice and you'll be good to go.
