P4 w/ HT.. two clients?

Hey, I'm running one client on my P4 (3.0GHz) with HT. Since HT (hyperthreading) doesn't actually increase your speed with single-threaded apps, should I run two clients (one on each logical core) or stay with one? It's acting weird now, saying it's using 50% of my processor (one logical core) even though I have not set the affinity, and it should be using all of it...

If so, how do I set different affinities for each client?
 
Just one client and even though it says 50% usage, it's actually using 100%.
 
In the past, running 2 client on a HT P4 gave you around 15% increase in your PpD.
Now-a-days with the bigger-more complex work units, the increase is much smaller, so its better to get the work units back fast.

I'll give it a try. I'm currently running one F@H client. I'll see what the differences are and then I'll give a try with two clients.

 
No Joy. This only works on SMP clients. I already tried running an SMP client on this machine. My wife uses it for her business. When she's working she takes enough cycles away to miss deadlines.

 
I have a 3.8 P4 that does fine with the SMP client. It makes deadlines pretty easily.
 
I didn't know they made a 3.8 Pentium D, no this is a HT P4.
I tried it to see what kind of production it will do. Since I only recently started using the SMP client on it, I'm watching it closely to see if it misses deadlines with some projects.

I don't think the poster was asking you if it was a stock pentium D I think he was asking if it might be a OC'ed PD. I was wondering the same thing. :)

Not knowing much about the PD (I had a PD 805 once), does it even have HT in the faster models :confused:

 
IIRC the Pentium D was not HT, the Extreme Edition Pentium D had HT.
But that may just be faulty memory. ;)

Highest I remember stock was 3.2 GHz. Never bothered to OC them, since the only boxes I had around with them were Dells at the office.
 
It's amazing if a single core P4 can meet the preferred SMP deadline. I might just pick up a cheap used board to enable HT on my Northwood and see what it can do. My current board doesn't support HT.
 
Well it is a 3.8 and it's a dedicated folder.
So far it's doing ok, but I need to watch and see if it makes deadlines for all units.
