P4 VS P3 PPD

I have lots of old machines at work, but limited space to set them up. Which of the following configs will yield the most PPD?

P3 1GHz 512MB SDRAM
P4 1.7Ghz 384MB Rambus

Since these are at work, heat and electricity is not an issue. And if anyone is wondering, both of the systems are Dells.

Actually the P3's were faster than the original P4's in certain types of computations. I'm not sure if it was a "clock for clock" comparison, or a slower clock P3 is faster than a hgher clocked P4, though.

To the OP, why not just run them headless side by side?
 
The willamette P4's were quite slow, and the 1.7 would actually perform close though slightly faster than the 1gig P3. Its not a no brainer, in fact its quite close.
 
I would run the P4's for the simple fact that there is a SLIM chance that QMD's could come back. Although with only 384megs of ram you might have some issues running them.
 
Well, I would like to run two of them and see which comes out ahead. However, I am not sure how to compare the PPD (diff work units, etc.). I only have room in my office for about 5 machines. We have about 20 of the P3 boxes, which is why I am able to get 512MB per unit (I yank ram from units I won’t be using). However, we only have about 4 of the P4 units.

I have never seen folding use more than 130MB of ram or so, so do you think the diff between 384 and 512 would cause a problem?
 
You'd probably want to stick to standard work units if there is any chance that the user(s) of the P-4 systems might complain that the system(s) are slower for some reason :)

Now if you can load up the P-4 systems with 512mb or more each, go for the P-4 systems.

These are old computers no longer used by my employer. However, since we are a gov agency, we can’t get rid of anything thanks to bureaucracy. Normally these units would sit in our basement for about 5 to 10 years until the paperwork finally clears and they are auctioned off in giant chunks along with thousands of other then useless items.

I have enough room in my office for about 5 of these machines (I stick them under my desk and they keep my feet warm!), but they won’t actually be used by anyone. They will be strictly for folding purposes only.
