how many different versions of the p4 are there? how can I tell which version I have without opening the case and removing the heat sink... I know it comes in 3 flavors, 400mhz 533mhz and 800mhz... is there different names other than northwood
 
Northwood, willamette, Prescott.

Willamette = 400fsb 256k cache
Northwood = 400/533fsb 512k cache
Prescott - 533/800fsb , 512k cache possibily
 
Willamette = 400fsb 256k cache 423/478 pin

Northwood = 400/533/800 FSB 512k cache (HT on some) 478 pin

P4 Extreme Edition/ Galatin = 800FSB, 2MB L3 cache, 478 pin - too expensive!!

Prescott - 533/800fsb , 1Mb cache, SSE3 (HT on most) 478 pin

Tejas/Prescott 800/1066FSB, 1MB, HT high pin count (like 700)

Multiple steppings. Current best is the 800FSB, HT enable, D1 & MO Northwoods. Ex: 2.4C, 2.6C, 2.8C, etc...
 
Thanks for the info, I have the 800mhz Northwood... I am having some problems overclocking this chip, well problems compared with other oc'ers.

What kinds of problems are you having and whats your system specs?

2.6C Northwood chip... model SL6WS
P4C800 E with last bios from ASUS
Ocz PC-4000 Gold Edition, 2.5,4,4,7 (set by spd)
2 Raid 0 36.7GB Raptors on the Promise
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
Enermax Noisetaker 420 watt

I can't get into windows anything past 225... any ideas?

I have mine configured the same, standard mode is on as well...
 
voltage on CPU?

temps under load (prime95) at the highest stable OC?

did you run memtest at near non stable speed?
 
I am running at 97 F / 37 C under load with prime 95 torture test... As far as volages, i am running the ram at 2.8, and I tring the vcore to 1.7, no improvement... I have the WS model on the P4... is that a problem?
