I'm looking at someones dell 3000 that isn't working. After testing the power supply in it that had been replaced with a 400w and the original 250w that was in it; both were fine with a volt meter. I dug deeper and discovered that the power switch was good, but the cpu itself was removed. :confused: when I pulled off the heatsink The cpu came off with it :eek:

Wow thats a whole lot of pins bent over :( so I proceed to straighten out these pins with a needle,tweezers and a magnifier and discover one missing. With a little wigglin I got it back together. Well long story short I do not have a Flat panel monitor yet and no adapter so it seems as though I don't have video with crt hooked up. No visible post but everything seems to boot.
Is there a pin missing on this cpu or just on mine?
Could you steer me to a place that tells me what I lost on this cpu?
Trash---- or put processor in a real mobo and use a piece of wire?
 
Just an update to my dilemma. After not getting any replies to the missing pin from anywhere I got desperate and searched high and low for a wire of the proper diameter and stiffness to try my theory out. Couldn't find it after stripping lots of wires solid,braided, coax...so I was hungry and while making a sandwich the answer was in my hand! I'm talking about the twist tie from the loaf of bread. Perfect fit and although it is not copper it is conductive none the less.
Cut to the chase after intalling and trimming the length 3 times VOILA!
Computer turns on POSTs and boots up windows.
Don't really know how long it will last but it did work.

p.s. This is not BS either

Since this little trick worked I may keep the cpu for myself and say it's fried ; look at the cpu, a pin is missing sir. The dell 3000 it came out of is junk and doesn't even have an agp or pcix slot. and he want's a graphics card installed. If you don't know how to build a computer what would inspire you to pull out the cpu? and if you realized your mistake do you just cram it back into the zif socket? Sorry for venting.....Thanks again
